HACKENSACK, N.J. --The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team will be searching for its first victory of the season when they travel over the George Washington Bridge to Manhattan to take on Columbia on Sunday. The Knights (0-2) held Army to 30 percent shooting from the field and five percent from distance, but the visiting Black Knights found a way to squeak out a 57-52 win to spoil FDU's home opener at Stratis Arena on Thursday night. FDU clung to an eight-point lead at 40-32 with 8:55 left in regulation, but Army (2-1) outscored the Knights 25-12 the rest of the way for the win.
Army was plus 15 in the battle on the boards with 50 rebounds, including 20 on the offensive end, to FDU's 35. FDU committed a season-low 15 turnovers and forced Army to turn the ball over 17 times. The Knights were active in pressuring the Black Knights' shooting efforts as Army shot just 18-of-59 from the field and 1-of-18 from behind the arc.
With 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 10 rebounds, sophomore
Erika Livermore (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) picked up her third double-double in three games this season, while redshirt junior
Danielle Pankey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) led the offense with 18 points and eight boards. Sophomore
Mariah Nunes (Ajax, Ontario/Bill Crothers ) added a career-high 10 points.
Columbia (0-3) will be playing its third Northeast Conference opponent to start the season. The Lions lost at home to LIU Brooklyn (53-42) and Wagner (61-47) with a road loss at Vermont (46-40) sandwiched in between.
Columbia returns four starters from a team that finished 3-25 (1-15 Ivy League) a season ago, and once again, is picked to finish last in the eight-team league. Senior guard Tyler Simpson is averaging 10.3 ppg to lead the Lions. Senior guard Brittany Simmons leads the team with 6.7 rpg, while junior forward Courtney Bradford chips in 7.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg and a team-best 2.7 bpg.
The Knights and the Lions will be meeting for the 12th time with FDU leading the all-time series, 6-5, which dates back to 1990. Last season, the Knights defeated Columbia, 71-51, three days after Christmas at Stratis Arena. Livermore paced FDU with a career-high 24 points on a career-best 10 field goals, while pulling down a career high 15 rebounds. The Lions last win in the series was an 80-60 victory on Dec. 2, 1997.
Following the game against Columbia, the Knights will have a week off before traveling to Riverdale, N.Y. in the Bronx to play Manhattan on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m.
