The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team opened up Northeast Conference play with a doubleheader split against Quinnipiac Friday afternoon at Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ. The Knights rallied in game one with four runs in the eighth inning to win 6-5. The Bobcats scored three runs in the first and four more in the seventh to take game two, 7-0. The Knights are now 4-8 (1-1 NEC) on the season, while the Bobcats are now 5-5 (1-1 NEC) overall.
After both teams failed to score over the first two innings, Quinnipiac put up a three-spot in the third as Joe Poletsky cranked a three-run shot to left-center to put the visitors up 3-0.
The Bobcats added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a Mickey Amanti RBI single and a wild pitch.
The Knights finally got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth when junior JT Sherba (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) scored on balk for the first run, while fellow classmate Matt Holsman (Coral Springs, FL/Stoneman Douglas) scored on fellow classmate Ryan Kresky (Freehold, NJ/Freehold)'s sacrifice fly to center field.
Neither team scored in the sixth and seventh innings, and the Knights held the Bobcats scoreless in the eight, setting up the comeback.
Kresky led off the eighth inning with a walk. Senior Erik Pollag (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) drove him home with a RBI double to left-center. Fellow classmate Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) then reached on an infield single on a high-chopper back to the pitcher that he beat out. After senior DJ Robinson (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) lined sharply to center field for the first out, fellow classmate Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary) singled to center to drive home Pollag. Dillon and LaForge each moved up a base on the play as the Bobcats' center fielder committed a throwing error. With junior Mike Eliasen (Swedesboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) at the plate, the Bobcats' catcher threw the ball into left field trying to pick of Dillon at third, allowing Dillon to score and advancing LaForge to third, tying the game at five. Eliasen then dropped down a beautiful bunt down the third baseline for a single, which drove home LaForge from third, giving the Knights all they needed to hold on to the 6-5 victory.
Senior Spencer Kelly (Rockville, MD/The Bullis School) pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season, and in the process, he became the Knights' all-time saves leader.
Senior Chris Theordor (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) started on the mound for the Knights. The righty pitched 6.0 innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits. He struck out four and walked only one.
The Knights' bullpen was solid over the final three innings as sophomore Eric Anderson (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands), senior Zach Kisling (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro Central) and Kelly each pitched a scoreless inning, allowing only one hit. Kisling (1-0) earned the victory with his effort in the eighth inning.
Kyle Birdsall pitched 7.0 innings for the Bobcats as four earned runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked two. Andrew Rinaldi, who came in relief in the eighth inning after Birdsall faced the first two batters, took the loss as the Knights' roughed him up for two runs on four hits.
LaForge, Sherba and Holsman each went 2-for-4 to lead the Knights' nine-hit attack. Amanti collected four hits to lead Quinnipiac's 10-hit attack.
Amanti and Farina started off game two with hits, setting up a three-run blast by No. 3 hitter Chris Magani, putting the Bobcats ahead 3-0.
After walking the batter after the home run, senior Nick Melchiorre (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Holy Cross) (2-2) settled down and retired the next 14 Quinnipiac hitters until someone reached on an error. He then retired the next straight hitters until giving up a lead-off single in the seventh inning as the Bobcats put the game away with four more runs to take the nightcap, 7-0.
Melchiorre pitched 6.2 innings as he gave up seven earned runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked only one batter.
Derrek LaMaccia shut down the Knights as he scattered six hits in the complete game effort. He struck out five and walked one.
The Knights only collected six hits with six different players each coming through with a base-knock.
After a day off tomorrow, the two teams will play a doubleheader starting at Noon at Bergen Community College.
