W. Fencing Continues to Grow With Strong Performances at NJIT Invitational

The Fairleigh Dickinson women's fencing team competed in the NJIT Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 21, squaring off with NJIT and Hunter on the day.

Head Coach Roger Cummings was pleased with how his team performed. “Our sabre and epee women did well, while foil is gaining experience,” Cummings said.

The Knights finished with a pair of 5-1 performances in sabre courtesy of sophomore Hanna Heldenmuth (Miami, Fla./Keystone National) and junior Genele Streitz (Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham High School). Freshman Kathryn Heaney (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) also had a respectable 3-3 mark on the day.

In epee, again FDU finished with two athletes with 5-1 records. Junior Christine Forsythe (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown) and senior Annie Kazarjan (Budapest, Hungary/Koecsey Ferenc Gimnazium) both won five of their six bouts, while senior  Evgeniya Tyrtova (Omst, Russia/Liceum #66) put together a 3-3 outing.

First-year members of the team, freshman Yeliz Inalman (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) and sophomore Meena Murugappan (Lusaka, Zambia/The International School of Lusaka ) continued in their development in foil.

The Knights will have two weeks to prepare for the Christmas Invitational in Jersey City, NJ on Sunday, Dec. 4. The competition is set to get underway at 8 a.m.
