FDU Completes Competition at Schiller Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. - FDU Fencing wrapped up their last round of the Schiller Duals on Sunday afternoon inside the new Ryan Fieldhouse on the campus of Northwestern University. The Knights took part in 11 bouts throughout the two days of competition, ending the competition going 5-6.

Day One: Saturday, January 31
The Knights opened the Schiller Duals with a bout against Denison University, facing a tough Big Red Epee squad. FDU was able to secure four bouts against the Denison Epee group, but fell short in the bout overall, dropping the opener 19-8.

FDU was able to rebound and secure back to back wins, first a 16-11 victory over Detroit Mercy where the Knights Epee group of Lauren Collela, Isabel You, and Sherleen Yunes grabbed seven of the nine bouts in the category against the Titans to lock up the first win of the duals for FDU. FDU was able to keep the momentum rolling in their next bout, as the Knights beat Wheaton by a dominant count of 23-4. The FDU Sabre Crew of Carmen Bolt-Turner, Mya Colin, and Zoe Rupp swept Wheaton as FDU cruised to a dominant win.

The Knights then were matched up against No. 7 Ohio State, and the Buckeyes got the better of FDU, topping the Knights 27-0. FDU then looked for a rebound against a talented Wayne State group, and the Knights fell short in the bout, despite beating Wayne State in the Sabre category 5-4.

Day Two: Sunday, Febuary 1
FDU started the second day on the right foot, as the Knights opened competition by topping Lawrence 16-11. The Knights Foil crew of Gabby Como, Samaria Sabal, Genesis Pena, and Sàra Szeverényi led the way, besting Lawrence 6-3 in the weapon category.

The Knights then were matched up against some of the country's best on day two, as FDU put up a valiant effort against Air Force, No. 11 Stanford, and No. 6 Northwestern, but the Knights dropped all three matchups throughout the morning of the second day.

FDU then ended the event with some momentum as the Knights dominated Incarnate Word, behind another sweep from the Sabre squad. Both the Foil and Epee teams bested the Cardinals 6-3, as the Knights cruised to a 21-6 win. In the final bout of the event, FDU topped Cleveland State by a final count of 17-10.
