W. Basketball Loses Fight at Boston College, 68-57

Box Score

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's basketball team fell to the Eagles of Boston College, 57-68, Friday, Nov. 11 at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, MA.  The Knights fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Eagles start their 2011-12 campaign 1-0.

A 13-point run late in the second half enabled the Eagles to take control of the game.

The Eagles pressured the Knights from tip-off and made five-consecutive baskets in the opening three minutes to take a 9-0 lead.

After a timeout called by Head Coach Pete Cinella, the Knights were back in the game.  A three-pointer from redshirt sophomore Danielle Pankey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) put the Knights on the board and a shots from freshman Amanda Andrades (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) and senior Esther Wallace (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) brought FDU within two points.

A jumper from Mariyah Laury (Orange, NJ/Orange) tied the game at 11 with 14 minutes remaining in the first half.

Although the Eagles maintained their lead, the Knights battled for points and did not allow BC to take more than a seven-point lead through the remainder of the half.

Behind nine points from Andrades and seven each from Laury and Pankey, the Knights trailed, 33-28, at halftime.  FDU shot 43.5% in the first period, while the Eagles converted only 31.7% of attempted shots.

The second half saw 35 free-throws taken between the two teams.  The Knights went 20-for-22 from the charity stripe for 90.9%, while the Eagles shot just 62.5%.

The free throws were not enough to catch the Eagles, who went on a 13-0 run between the 6:46 and 4:38 marks.  The run helped BC take its largest lead of the day, 19 points.

Laury broke the Knights' drought on a layup with 3:34 to go and helped the team cut the Eagle lead.  FDU never stopped their battle for the ball and outscored BC, 11-3 in the final minutes of the game.

The Knights were led by preseason All-Conference selection, Laury, who notched 19 points.  Pankey added 13 for FDU and recorded five rebounds in 33 minutes.  Andrades recorded nine points and four assists in her first collegiate game.

Wallace grabbed seven rebounds and added two blocks.  The Knights shot 32.0% from the field overall with a 90.9 field-goal percentage.

The Eagles scored 27 points off FDU turnovers but shot just 30.6% from the floor and scored more than ten fewer points than they averaged during the 2010-11 season.

The Knights take on Yale on Monday, Nov. 14 in their home opener.  Tip-off at Stratis Arena is slated for 5:00 pm.
