The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball was defeated by Quinnipiac in its home and season finale this evening in Stratis Arena at the Rothman Center, 68-51. With the loss, the Knights fail to qualify for the Northeast Conference post-season tournament, and their season ends with an overall record of 9-20 (5-13 NEC). The Bobcats finish the regular season with an overall record season record of 12-17 (7-11 NEC).
Redshirt Sophomore Jasmyra Saunders (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic) led the Knights with 18 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Sophomore Mariyah Laury (Orange, NJ/Orange) added 17 points, including 15 points after halftime. Sophomore Esther Wallace (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) grabbed seven rebounds to pace the Knights on the boards.
Two minutes into the game, Saunders scored the first two points as she went coast-to-coast for the layup to give the Knights the early lead.
Junior Kayla Killian (Cliffwood Beach, NJ/St. John Vianney) knocked down a three-pointer from the left wing to put the Knights up, 5-0.
The Bobcats answered with seven unanswered points take the lead before Saunders converted another layup to tie the game at seven.
After the Bobcats scored the next four points, Saunders scored on a fast break layup, and Laury knocked down a jumper from the left elbow to tie the game at 11, with 8:42 to go in the first half.
Quinnipiac knocked down a three to once again take the lead. Wallace's turnaround jumper in the lane cut the deficit to one, 14-13,
The Knights all of a sudden found themselves down eight as the Bobcats scored seven more unanswered points. Killian's second three of the half cut the lead to 21-16.
The Bobcats quickly answered with five more points to extend their lead to 26-16, with 3:57 to go in the first half.
Junior Jenna Strich's offensive rebound put-back started a 7-0 run by the Knights that saw freshman Alannah Driscoll-Sbar (Northampton, MA/Northampton) knock down a trey ball from the right wing. Saunders layup capped the run and cut the lead to three, 26-23.
The final five points of the half were scored by the Bobcats, and they took a 31-23 lead into halftime.
Saunders led the Knights in the first half with eight points. Killian added six points. Wallace grabbed five boards to lead the team.
The Knights shot 31.3 percent (10-for-32) from the field, while the Bobcats shot 37.9 percent (11-for-29). The Bobcats also controlled the boards in the first half, out-rebounding the Knights, 25-17. The Knights did win the first-half turnover battle as they only turned the ball over eight times, while forcing 11 turnovers.
The Knights cut into the Bobcats' lead to open the second half, but a big three-pointer by the visitors put them back up double-digits, 36-26.
Down 11, Laury scored the next five points to cut the lead back to six. However, the Bobcats scored five quick points to go up, 42-31, with 13:23 to go in the game.
Wallace converted a three-point play the old-fashion way to cut the lead back down to eight. Quinnipiac then scored nine unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game, 51-34.
The Knights scored the next six points to cut the lead to 51-40, with 8:16 to go. It was the closest the Knights would come to the Bobcats the rest of the game as Quinnipiac ended the Knights mini 6-0 run as they scored a layup with 5:51 to go.
Quinnipiac outscored the Knights, 17-11, the rest of the way to cruise to the 68-51 victory.
The Knights struggled from the field as they only shot 30.2 percent (19-for-63) from the field, including only 23.8 percent (5-for-21) from three-point range. The Bobcats fared better from the field as they shot 39.7 percent (23-for-58) and went 7-for-17 from behind-the-arc.
The Knights also were dominated on the glass as the Bobcats won the rebounding battle, 56-32. However, the Knights won the turnover battle as they forced 20 turnovers by the Bobcats, while only turning the ball over 16 times.
"We battled to the very end," said Head Coach Pete Cinella. "You have to give Quinnipiac and Coach Fabbri a lot of credit. They played very well and hit big shots. We have to figure out a way to play and rebound better next year."
