Women's Basketball Uses Big Second-Half Run to Take Down Mount St. Mary's, 55-44

The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team used a 24-2 second-half run over an 8:07 stretch to defeat Mount St. Mary's Saturday evening, 55-44, in an NEC-battle in Stratis Arena at the Rothman Center.  Fairleigh Dickinson shot 61.9 percent (13-for-21) in the second half to rally from a six-point deficit.  The Knights improve to 8-17 (4-10 NEC), while the Mountaineers fall to 8-16 (4-10 NEC) overall.

 

Sophomore Mariyah Laury (Orange, NJ/Orange) led the Knights in scoring with a game-high 16 points.  She also dished out a game-high five assists.  Freshman Alannah Driscoll-Sbar (Northampton, MA/Northampton) added 11 points on 3-for-5 shooting from three-point range.  Junior Alyssa Mayrose (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) chipped in 10 points and shared rebounding honors with sophomore Esther Wallace (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central), as both players pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Knights on the glass.  Defensively, redshirt sophomore Jasmyra Saunders (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic) recorded four steals.

The Mountaineers went up 2-0 to start the game before Driscoll-Sbar knocked down a three-pointer to put the Knights up, 3-2.  Her basket triggered an 8-0 run by the Knights.

On the Knights'  next possession, Mayrose had a chance to convert an old-fashion three-point play but missed the free throw.  Her basket put the Knights up, 5-2.

Mayrose then knocked down a deep three-pointer from the left wing to extend the lead to 8-2, with 14:21 to go in the first half.

The Mountaineers then knocked down a three-pointer before Saunders' coast-to-coast lay-up put the Knights up, 10-5.

After the Mountaineers were able to cut the lead to one, Driscoll-Sbar scored on a driving left-handed lay-up to put the Knights up, 12-9.

The Mountaineers then scored six unanswered points to go back up, 15-12, with 4:45 to go in the first half.

Laury ended the Mountaineers' mini-run with two free throws and cut the lead to 15-14.

The Mountaineers scored the last four points of the half to go into halftime up five, 19-14.  The Knights failed to score over the final 3:54 of the first half.

Mayrose and Driscoll-Sbar each scored five points to lead the Knights in scoring in the first half.  Mayrose grabbed four rebounds to lead the team on the boards.  Defensively, Saunders recorded three steals.

Both teams struggled mightily in the first half.  The Mountaineers had the better shooting half as they shot 27.1 percent (6-for-22) from the field.  The Knights struggled even more from the field as they shot 16.1 percent (5-for-31).

The Mountaineers also out-rebounded the Knights in the first half, 25-20.  However, the Knights forced 12 turnovers, including seven steals.  The Knights turned the ball over nine times.

The Knights scored on their first possession of the second half scoring as Laury knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing to put the Knights down, 19-17.  It was her first basket of the game.

The Mountaineers went back up, 23-17, as they scored on their first two possessions of the second half.

Laury then found a wide-open Wallace underneath the basket to cut the lead back to four, 23-19.

The Mountaineers then went back up six on their next possession, and Laury knocked down two free throws on the Knights' next possession to cut the lead back to four.

On their fourth possession of the second half, the Mountaineers scored again to go back up six, 27-21.

The Knights then scored 11 unanswered points, which started on Driscoll-Sbar's three-pointer from the left wing.  Her second trey during the run gave the Knights the lead, 29-27, with 14:27 to go in the game.

Junior Kayla Killian (Cliffwood Beach, NJ/St. John Vianney)'s three-pointer from the right wing capped the run, and the Knights found themselves up five, 32-27.

The Mountaineers ended their scoreless streak as they knocked down one of two free throw attempts.

Laury knocked down two free throws to start another Knight run that saw them score eight unanswered points to go up, 40-28.  After recording another steal, Saunders found a streaking Jenna Strich, who delivered a beautiful pass to Laury, to cap the mini-run.

Laury's second three-pointer of the second half, and two free throws by the sophomore Strich, gave the Knights their largest lead of the game, 45-29, with 8:00 to go.

The Mountaineers then scored the next four points before Mayrose knocked down one of two free throws to give the Knights a 46-33 lead.

After the Mountaineers cut the lead to 10, Laury found Killian underneath for a layup with a pretty pass to put the Knights up, 48-36.

The Knights put the game away when Strich buried a three-pointer from the right wing to give the Knights a 53-37 lead, with 2:27 to go in the game.

The Mountaineers outscored the Knights, 7-2, the rest of the way, but the Knights came out on top with the victory, 55-44.

After a dismal first half shooting the basketball, the Knights bounced back in a big way in the second half and ended the game shooting 34.6 percent (18-for-52).  The Mountaineers could never get anything going from the field and finished the game shooting 26.9 percent (14-for-52) from the field.

The Knights were also on fire in the second half from three-point range as they went 6-for-7 from behind-the-arc.  They finished the game shooting 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from long-range.   They have made eight three-pointers in back-to-back games.  The Knights held the Mountaineers to 15.8 percent (3-for-19) from long-range.  It was also their second straight game they have held their opponent to under 20 percent shooting from behind-the-arc.

Defensively, the Knights won the turnover battle as they forced 20 turnovers, including 12 steals, while only turning the ball over 16 times.

Mount St. Mary's won the rebounding battle, out-rebounding the Knights, 45-31, including 19 on the offensive glass.

"We had a great run in the second half to take control of the game," said Head Coach Pete Cinella.  "The team's energy and defensive focus was top notch.  We moved the ball and found the open player better than we have all year in the second half."

Sydney Henderson led the Mountaineers with 11 points.  Leah Westbrooks grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers on the glass.

The Knights will look to win their third consecutive game as they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on Long Island, Thursday, February 18.  Tip-off for the NEC match-up is slated for 5:00 p.m.
