The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team fell to Stony Brook, 68-51, on Thursday, December 2 at Pritchard Gym in Stony Brook, NY. With the loss, the Knights fall to 3-3 overall while the Seawolves improve to 3-3.
The Knights were slow to get going, scoring just six points in the first 4:30 of the game. Stony Brook took the lead early, scoring 11 in the same period of time.
The first half saw 14 turnovers from the Knights. Stony Brook was able to capitalize on the mistakes, scoring 15 points on turnovers alone. In the first half the Knights were led by senior Alyssa Mayrose (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) who had seven points and two rebounds. Junior Jasmyra Saunders (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic) (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic) had five points, an assist and a steal. Junior Esther Wallace (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) led the team with seven rebounds.
The Seawolves went 9-for-14 from the charity stripe to add to their first-half lead. At the break, the Knights were down 33-22.
Stony Brook began the second half with a quick three-pointer but freshman Danielle Pankey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) (Middletown, NJ/Middletown) responded quickly with a layup. Senior Mariyah Laury (Orange, NJ/Orange) (Orange, NJ/Orange) grabbed her first two points of the game, bringing the score to 36-26.
The Knights continued to put points on the board but were constantly met with responses from the Seawolves. With four minutes remaining in the half the Knights were down 57-42.
The Seawolves' heavy defense prevented the Knights from catching up in the final minutes of the game. The Knights ultimately fell 68-51.
The Knights were out-rebounded 49-43 and out-shot 35.8% to 34%. The Seawolves earned the win by scoring 24 points off of turnovers and making 16-of-25 free-throws.
The Seawolves were led by Sam Landers who had 14 points. Gerda Gatling added 10 points and nine rebounds for SBU. The Knights were able to hold Stony Brooks' leading scorer, Kirsten Jeter to only seven points in the game.
FDU was led by Mayrose who chalked-up her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She also recorded three steals. Laury added 13 for the Knights. Wallace also had 10 rebounds.
"Stony Brook stepped up and made shots," said Head Coach Pete Cinella. "We need to improve our all-around defense."
The Knights continue their road trip at Lafayette on Saturday, December 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Kirby Sports Center.
