The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's basketball staged a second-half comeback at host Central Connecticut on Saturday afternoon, but it was halted as the Knights fell, 77-67.
After being down as many as 19 in the first half, the Knights (6-16, 5-5 Northeast Conference) came back in the second frame to take a lead before eventually falling to the Blue Devils (7-14, 4-6 NEC). After a 43 shooting percentage in the first half, the Knights shot 50 percent in the second half. FDU's defense came back to hold CCSU to 36 percent in the final period after the Blue Devils shot 63 percent in the first half.
Senior Sean Baptiste (North Brunswick, NJ/St. Josephs of Metuchen) led the Knights with his second-straight 20+ game, and his sixth of the season, scoring 21 points. Junior Mike Scott (Philadelphia, PA/Texas Christian) added 12 points and junior Terence Grier (Cranford, NJ/St. Thomas More Prep) chipped in 11 points and three steals. Baptiste was just shy of a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds. Senior Alvin Mofunanya (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) finished the game with four blocks, eight points and five rebounds. Mofunanya is just four blocks short of 100 for his career.
Central Connecticut scored the first six points of the game, but Scott and Grier had back-to-back baskets as Grier swiped a steal. The Blue Devils responded with a 9-0 run to grab hold of a 15-4 edge.
Junior John Galvin (Weston, CT/Weston)'s lay-in on an assist from Scott with 10 and a half remaining in the first half cut the Blue Devils' advantage to 18-14, capping a 10-3 run for the Knights, but Central staged a 20-7 offensive spurt over the next eight and a half minutes for a 38-21 lead.
FDU scored the next six points, with four coming from Scott, to cut Central Conn.'s lead, but the Blue Devils took a 42-28 advantage into the half.
Baptiste led Fairleigh Dickinson with eight points, connecting on 2-for-3 from three-point range, while Shemik Thompson and Joe Seymore each had 10 points to lead CCSU. Central Connecticut out-rebounded FDU, 19-12, and shot 62.5 percent from the floor, while holding the Knights to 42.9 percent.
The Knights came out of the half strong, scoring the first five points as Baptise drained a three and Mofunanya had a dunk. FDU started the second half with a 10-4 run, finished off by an old-fashioned three-point play by Baptiste, cutting the Blue Devils' edge to single-digits, 46-38, with 16:27 remaining in the game.
Fairleigh Dickinson stormed back, making it a two-point game (49-47), with 13:29 on the clock as Baptiste had a lay-in, Scott sank two from the line on a Central bench technical and Galvin converted a three-point play.
Seymore connected on a three before Thompson netted a jumper to give Central Conn. a 55-47 lead with 10 minutes left to play in regulation but FDU scored the next nine points, with five coming from Baptiste, to take its first lead of the game, 56-55, with seven minutes left in the game. Fairleigh Dickinson was able to take the lead as the result of an 18-6 run, getting seven points from Baptiste and four from Scott during the spurt.
The Blue Devils reclaimed the lead as Thompson scored their next 10 points for a 63-56 edge. CCSU connected on eight free throws in the final minute of play to take the 77-67 win.
"You can't go on the road and be down 14 points at the half," said Head Coach Greg Vetrone. "You have to credit this team- we fought back and were able to come back and go up by one. They never give up. But, on the road, when you are exerting that much effort to come back, it's tough. Sean played a great game and John is giving us a great lift off the bench, but we needed more."
Thompson led Central Conn. with 24 points, Seymore had 20 points, Markeys Deans added 13 and Chris Baskerville had 11 points. Deans grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Central Connecticut held a 37-30 edge on the glass and connected on nine three-pointers for a 43 three-point percentage.
The Knights return home to host intrastate rival Monmouth on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
