SYRACUSE, N.Y. –
Katia Cardaba netted both the equalizing and game-winning goals in a 3-2 victory for FDU (4-5-3, 4-0) over Le Moyne (0-8-3, 0-1-2) on Sunday afternoon. The streaking Knights have won four in a row and collected points in six straight matches.
It again was a come from behind effort for the Knights, who surrendered the game's first two goals early in the first half. This marks the third time during this point streak that FDU has fallen behind but managed to come back to win or draw.
"The one thing that they have is confidence in themselves," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "I think we have been doing it all year. Even if we have not gotten results, we've kept playing."
Despite trailing on the scoreboard, chances were coming often for FDU. The Knights earned their seventh corner in the 38
th minute.
Elena Cvetkovic rose above the Dolphin defenders to knock a header towards goal.
Dominique Liberto was standing in the perfect spot to deflect the ball in for her fourth goal of the season.
Ana Salas and Cvetkovic were both credited with assists on the play.
Less than seven minutes later, FDU had possession in their attacking end again. This time
Marina Burzaco played a beautiful ground pass to Cardaba, who was able to equalize the match at 2-2 heading into halftime.
With the assist, Burzaco's point streak reaches six matches. The sophomore attacker has produced 15 points during this stretch.
FDU continued to dictate possession in the second half. In the 57
th minute, their two goal scorers came together for a go-ahead strike. Liberto found Cardaba in the box, and Cardaba buried it in the back of the net. FDU now led 3-2.
Cardaba has scored four goals in the last three matches and sits tied for the team lead in goals at five.
"She was fantastic," continued Teepe. "Not just scoring the goals, but doing the dirty work defensively, always being the outlet, and stretching the field. There is so much she does out there which really is helpful to us."
The Knights outshot Le Moyne 10-0 in the second half and held on for their first multi-goal come from behind victory of the season. They are a perfect 4-0 in league play, scoring 16 goals en route to that mark.
While the margin on the scoreboard was slim, FDU dominated the box score. They outshot their opponent 18-2 and allowed just one shot on goal. They produced 14 corners to their opponent's zero.
FDU is back in action next Sunday, October 5, at Mercyhurst. The match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. kick and can be seen on NEC Front Row.
