TEANECK, N.J. – FDU (2-5-3, 2-0) recorded 31 shots in a dominant 5-2 win over New Haven (0-5-0, 0-2-0) on Sunday afternoon. The Knights have collected six points through two matches in NEC play.
While the end result was convincing, the early stages of this match suggested a different picture might be painted. New Haven sprung a counterattack in the ninth minute and scored the match's first goal.
It took the Knights just under 15 minutes to find their equalizer. A cross ricocheted off of two Knights and found the foot of
Katia Cardaba. The junior stepped up and delivered a leveling goal.
Marina Burzaco and
Ana Salas were each credited with an assist.
FDU seemed destine to score the game's next goal, but the opportunistic Chargers struck again in the 35
th minute. A failed FDU clearance and a New Haven bounce allowed the visiting side to retake a 2-1 lead.
At that point, the Chargers had recorded two shots. They would not record another for the entirety of the match.
With 1:02 remaining in the half FDU's persistent possession paid off, yet again. Burzaco flicked a ball towards
Laura Martinez. The Spanish midfielder took one touch and then unloaded a shot that flew to the right of New Haven's goalkeeper. It marks Martinez' second goal of the season.
Burzaco's two assists on the day gives her five on the season. She leads the conference with 13 points and has recorded a goal contribution in each of the last four matches.
The Knights outshot New Haven 12-0 in the second half and totally dominated the remainder of the match. However, that domination was perfected in a two minute and 34 second span. First, Cardaba capitalized on a Charger miscue to give FDU their first lead. Then,
Dominique Liberto added an insurance goal 54 seconds later.
Ana Salas capped off with a 53
rd minute goal that completely sealed the fate of this match.
For Cardaba, it her second career brace. She has scored three goals this season.
Liberto, a senior who came into this season with two career goals, continue to enjoy a nice start to her final year. Her strike today gives her three goals on the season.
The Knights have scored 14 goals in their last four matches, after scoring just five in their first five matches of the season. Burzaco has eight goal contributions in that span.
The Knights host Stonehill on Thursday, September 25, in another NEC match. FDU defeated the Skyhawks 2-0 at Stonehill last season. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. kick and can be seen on NEC Front Row.
