Knights Swept by Sharks

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The FDU Knights (8-28, 8-10 NEC) dropped both games of a doubleheader to the LIU Sharks (18-16, 12-3 NEC) on Saturday. The Knights fell 14-4 in a seven-inning opener before being shut out 3-0 in the second game.

Game 1

Jeremy Cheeseman got the start on the mound for the Knights, tossing 4.1 innings. He allowed six earned runs on nine hits while striking out six. Ian Barrett came on in relief, pitching two innings during which the Sharks added five more runs.

FDU struck first in the top of the first inning when Johnathan Gomez drove in Travis Stroh with an RBI single. However, LIU quickly responded with two runs in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead.

The Sharks extended their lead to 5-1 in the second inning behind a solo home run and an RBI double.

The Knights chipped away at the deficit, scoring one run in both the fourth and fifth innings. Nate Dudeck came home on an RBI single by Anthony Chiappetta in the fourth, and Gomez scored on a Cheeseman single in the fifth to make it a 5-3 game.

LIU broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, plating eight runs on two doubles, two singles, a sacrifice fly, and a key defensive miscue by FDU. The offensive explosion gave the Sharks a commanding 13-3 lead.

Diego Urreta added a run for FDU in the seventh with an RBI single to center, but the Sharks answered with one more in the bottom half to secure a 14-4 win in seven innings.

Game 2

Jordan Savinon delivered another strong performance for the Knights in game two. The junior left-hander pitched seven innings, allowing just three runs on three hits while striking out eight. Nick Noble tossed a perfect eighth inning in relief.

LIU broke the scoreless tie in the seventh with a bases-loaded walk followed by a two-run single, which proved to be the difference in their 3-0 win.
