HACKENSACK, N.J. - Sophomore outside hitter
Vinil Shah led the way for FDU (6-5) against Dominican (5-12) on Friday at the Bogota Savings Bank Center, 3-0.
The first set saw the Knights with an early four-point run to open a 9-5 lead. The Chargers continued to claw back to within two points but were kept at arms length. FDU's presence at the net was strong, limiting the Dominican hitting percentage to .067, forcing nine attack errors.
Senior,
Artem Vetrov, had a lethal service performance throughout the match, but particularly in the second set. It was Vetrov's serves that led to a seven-point run to open a 12-5 lead for the home side. Dominican would answer though with a 11-2 run of their own to take the lead at 21-20. Shah took over to get the Knights out of danger, connecting on three kills over the final five points to take set two.
The final set saw the Knights service game perform well again forcing the Chargers into bad passes and allowing FDU to create some distance at 15-11. Following the media timeout, Dominican took advantage of some FDU miscues and a service ace of their own, one of only three they had for the entire match. Back-to-back kills by Vetrov opened another four point cushion at 21-17 and the Shah delivered point 24 of the set. Dominican would have another attack error to end the match.
Rayjan Suarez Palacios continued his offensive prowess, hitting .750 with six kills in the match.
