Close Match Goes the Knights Way

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - FDU (7-5) completed the season sweep of Dominican (4-15) on Monday night, 3-2. The five set match needed extra points in the final set to determine the winner, with FDU getting the right bounces.

Sophomore outside hitter, Vinil Shah, continued his high offensive output with 20 kills while hitting a brilliant .405.

The first set did not go as planned for the Burgundy and Blue, hitting below .100. Dominican jumped out to a fast start with five straight points and didn't look back. In the second set, FDU dominated with junior Dylan McFadden picking up two aces and two kills to bring the Knights lead to 4-6, forcing a Dominican timeout. Shah and McFadden continued the hot hands and closed out the set to tie the match.

In the pivotal third set FDU jumped out to a 9-3 advantage, featuring two McFadden aces and two kills from Shah. The Chargers would chip away but could never tie the score as FDU kept a two point cushion. The fourth set was close at 14-13 led by the home team, and then the Chargers went on a massive 10-2 run to reach set point. FDU did not hit nearly as well in the fourth hitting .080.

The final set featured more runs with Dominican picking up the 5-1 lead to start. Then errors by the Chargers let the Knights back in and the set was tied at five. Both teams traded points and were knotted up at 10. Dominican had two kills followed by kills from Shah and Artem Vetrov. The teams traded a couple more points resulting in match point for the Chargers, but they could not execute, committing a service error. FDU would capitalize with a huge double block from senior Baboloki Prince Silwane and sophomore Rayjan Suarez Palacios. Following a Dominican timeout, the Chargers committed another attack error and FDU escaped with the victory.
