EVANSTON, Ill. - The FDU women's fencing team traveled to Northwestern University to compete in a two day event, the Schiller Duals. The Burgundy and Blue faced off with opponents from Northwestern, UC San Diego, Wheaton, Lawrence, and the Air Force.
Round 1:
FDU faced UC San Diego in the opening round. Graduate Student
Nicole Gavrilko led the way for the epee squad where she came away with a clean 3-0 record. UC San Diego would win the match 24-3.
Round 2:
The Knights took on Wheaton in the second round. The foil squad recorded an impressive 6-3 score to get the Burgundy and Blue started.
Sherleen Yunes and Gavrilko led the epee squad with a 3-0 record each against the Wheaton crew. The epee squad logged an 8-1 score.
Zoe Rupp closed out the round in sabre with her own clean sheet. FDU would win the match 17-4.
Round 3:
The third round was against Lawrence and the Knights enjoyed more success in the epee and foil squads.
Gabriella Como and
Layla Stevenson both logged a win each in foil. Gavrilko went 3-0 while Yunes picked up two wins and
Jade Burnett capped off the round with a win of her own as well. Penn would win the match 19-8.
Round 4:
The Knights faced the host school in the fourth round. Gavrilko recorded the only win for FDU. Northwestern would win the match 26-1.
Round 5:
FDU closed out day one against the Air Force. In foil,
Dominique Greaux-Gist and
Jordana Greaux-Gist recorded their first wins of the day while Como added another win to her day. The epee squad was led by Gavrilko with another 3-0 round along with two more wins for Yunes. Air Force would win the match 20-7.
FDU will continue their meet in the Schiller Duals at Northwestern on February 2.
