TEANECK, N.J.- The FDU Knights (9-5-5, 9-0-2) secured the top seed in the NEC women's soccer playoffs with a 2-0 victory over Howard (9-6-3, 7-2-2).
In a rematch of last season's NEC championship game, the Knights' victory set a program record for most conference wins in a season.
"We've played really well all year, and I think because of that, they've earned this." head coach Eric Teepe said. "They've made sure that if there's going to be a championship this year, it's going to have to come through us. We know it's going to be tough, just the last three games will tell you all you need to know about how tough it's going to be."
Junior Ana Salas made her presence felt early in the game. She had the first two shots of the contest, the first of which was saved by the visiting keeper. On her second attempt, Maria Barrero provided the helper as Salas found the back of the net in the 12th minute.
The Bison were held to just one shot in the first half, as the Knights were able to protect their half of the field. At the intermission, FDU held onto a 1-0 lead.
After the first half, the Knights outshot the Bison 8-1, as the Knights also took the only four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of action.
Salas was not done impacting the game, as she was able to cash in once again in the 62nd minute, with an assist provided by Marina Burzaco.
The Knights held on to secure a 2-0 victory on Senior Day, winning their sixth straight game at home.
The Knights now hold home field advantage throughout the playoffs, and will host an opponent in the semifinal round on Thursday, November 6.
