PHILADELPHIA, PA - The FDU women's fencing team competed at the Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. It was an elite field of schools competing and the Burgundy and Blue picked up key individual victories throughout the day.
Round 1:
FDU battled Temple in the opening round. Graduate Student
Nicole Gavrilko led the way for the epee squad, winning all three of her matches. Sophomore
Sherleen Yunes and freshman
Jade Burnett, each picked up a win. FDU would win the epee competition 5-4 but Temple would win the team match 22-5.
Round 2:
The second round featured Ivy League opponent Princeton. Once again the epee squad delivered four more wins. Gavrilko won two bouts and Yunes and Burnett each picked up another win, showing impressive resolve. Princeton would win the match 17-7.
Round 3:
The third round was against the host school and the Knights enjoyed more success in the epee and foil squads. Gavrilko went 2-1 while Yunes picked up a win as well. In the foil squad, seniors
Jordana Greaux-Gist and
Dominique Greaux-Gist and freshman
Gabriella Como each picked up wins against the Quakers. Penn would win the match 21-6.
Round 4:
The final round of the day saw the Burgundy and Blue face off against Penn State. The Nittany Lions would go on to sweep the Knights in the foil and saber competitions, but FDU prevailed in the epee 5-4. Gavrilko and Yunes each went 2-1, while Burnett ended the day for FDU with the deciding victory.
FDU heads to the Windy City for the Schiller Duals at Northwestern on February 1-2.
