TEANECK, N.J. – The FDU women's soccer team celebrated their "Senior Day" in style with a 2-1 victory over LIU on Sunday afternoon. The Knights have won three straight matches and lead the NEC with 19 points. They are 6-1-1 in conference play.
"First of all, it's just a positive that we won again," remarked head coach
Eric Teepe. "It's another step closer to the playoffs, which is our first goal."
The Burgundy and Blue smothered the visiting Sharks in the first half. Not only did the Knights dominate possession, they also outshot LIU 11-0 in the opening 45 minutes.
The highlight of the first half came early in the match. In the 5',
Anna Cacciuttolo played a high cross into the box that was headed home by
Ana Salas. The Spaniard Salas leads the team with four goals and 13 points. The assist is Cacciuttolo's second in her last three games, as she now has three "helpers" on the year. This goal put FDU ahead 1-0 at halftime.
FDU wasted no time adding to their lead in the second half. This time it was senior
Briana Esteves putting her name in the scoring column. An unselfish pass from
Marina Burzaco in the 49' set up Esteves for her first goal since 2021. FDU led 2-0 with 41 minutes to play.
"What I liked about our goals was the ball movement," said Teepe. "The first one was a great service from Anna. Then the second one, Marina selflessly set up Bri for the finish."
LIU's Grace Hennig found a scrappy goal in the 60' to cut the deficit to 2-1, but FDU held off the Sharks' effort for an equalizer.
In the end, FDU outshot LIU 23-3. The Knights' defensive unit has held their opponents to just ten total shots in their last three matches.
