Tight Contest Ends in Defeat for Knights

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Maryland Eastern Shore edged FDU by a score of 54-47 in a back-and-forth-battle on Saturday afternoon. With this game the Knights drop to 2-8, while the Hawks get back to .500 at 5-5.

NOTABLE NAMES
  • Teneisia Brown had a stellar outing as she dropped 14 points and collected eight boards.
  • Brown has now scored in double-figures seven times this year.
  • Abby Conklin and Staci Williams both tallied ten points each for the Knights.
  • Wilma Sorensen pulled in a career-high eight rebounds.

QUARTER 1

After falling behind 2-0, back-to-back buckets from Lilly Parke and Bella Toomey put the Knights ahead 4-2. This would be the largest lead of the game for FDU. The Hawks took a 19-14 lead into the final minute of the quarter and were threatening to pull away. However, a 4-0 FDU spurt in the final 50 seconds, highlighted by buckets from Williams and Brown, pulled the Knights back within one at 19-18 when the buzzer sounded. These last two baskets brought FDU to a total of eight field goals in the first quarter.

QUARTER 2

The Hawks continued to put the pressure on the Knights as they extended their lead to as many as seven twice. However, a resilient FDU squad did not go away easily. It was again Williams and Brown leading the charge. They combined for all ten of FDU's points in the second frame. Trailing 30-24, Brown exploded into the lane for a layup. Then after a UMES three, Williams drew a foul with less than a second remaining in the half. The guard would knock down two free throws to cut the lead to 33-28 at the break. The battle on the glass was just as tight  as UMES out-rebounded FDU in the first-half 16-15.

QUARTER 3

While FDU only made four field goals in the third, they played their best defensive quarter of the game. UMES went 3-16 from the field and were only able to put up nine points in the frame. The Hawks crawled their way to 40-33 lead but FDU utilized their sharp-shooting ability to get back on track. Williams and Sorensen knocked down back-to-back threes on consecutive possessions to bring the score to 40-39. These were two of FDU's six threes on the day. UMES found a bucket late in the quarter to give them a 42-39 advantage.

QUARTER 4

FDU's shooting woes resumed in the fourth period, as they went 3-14 from the floor. Despite this, they were able to tie the game at 44-44 courtesy of Conklin's 29th three-pointer of the season. Brown would then sink a free throw to give the Knights a 45-44 lead, their first lead since it was 7-6 with 6:34 to play in the first quarter. UMES immediately regained the lead with a triple, but Parke came down the floor and hit a jumper to knot the game at 47-47. The Knights were then held scoreless for the final 4:14 of play. As FDU went 0-6 from the floor down the stretch, UMES capitalized at the free throw line scoring five of their final seven points from the charity stripe. In total, they were an impressive 11-12 from the line on the day. This helped them cement a 54-47 victory.
