FDU Secure First Win in Dominating 5-1 Performance

Hackensack N.J.- The Fairleigh Dickinson Women's Soccer team (1-6-0) faced Rider (3-2-1) today, September 8th at 7 PM. FDU came out of the gates energized and ready to play as they dominated play from the first minute to the last in a 5-1 win.

How it Happened

1st Half

  • FDU opened the scoring in the 7' with a beautiful first-time finish from junior Franziska Theus who scored her first goal of her FDU career assisted by sophomore Aitana Martínez-Montoya.
  • The Burgundy and Blue continued to pile on the pressure after the goal and found the second breakthrough in the 21' after graduate student Lea Egner pounced on the second chance and made it 2-0 FDU.
  • Rider responded quickly with a goal of their own in the 22' that Lindsey Maslow scored which made it 2-1.
  • FDU were not fazed by the Rider goal and continued to keep on the pressure which paid off in the 35' when Montoya calmly slotted home the penalty kick for her second goal of the season.
  • Malene Nielsen played a big part in keeping Rider at bay by making 5 saves in the half.
  • FDU recorded 17 shots in the first half, 7 of those being on target.

2nd Half

  • The Burgundy and Blue came out in the second half and continued to play attacking soccer when they could've sat back and defended the lead.
  • With a two-goal lead in the 63' Nielsn again made a big save to keep the knights from striking distance and give the team a boost.
  • The attacking style of play paid off once again in the 64' when Theus bagged her second goal of the game at the back post to make it 4-1.
  • FDU continued to dominate the match and scored the final goal in the 88' when Erica Petrie dribbled past two defenders and sweetly scored with a low driven shot into the net to make it 5-1.
  • The Burgundy and blue outshot rider 27-15 during the game and took their chances well throughout the match.
Quoteable

"We did a good job of getting quality shots, we had a lot of chances in the past few games and didn't do much with them but today we were dangerous with all of our opportunities. " Said head coach Eric Teepe. "I felt our back line did a great job of handling the dangerous Rider attack besides the one goal we gave up right after we scored, I think after that we recovered well and really limited their chances."

"I feel great! I think today was a very good team performance and I am very happy that I helped the team with 2 goals today." Stated Franziska Theus "I really enjoyed playing as a winger today, I played this position before I came to FDU at my old club and really feel comfortable there."
