Knights Win While Keeping First Clean Sheet of Season

Teaneck N.J.- The FDU Women's soccer team (4-7-1)(3-0-1) played Wagner (2-9)(0-3) tonight, September 29th at 7PM. FDU kept their first clean sheet of the season and Aitana-Martínez-Montoya scored for the fourth game in a row.

How It Happened

1st Half

  • The first half was tightly contested with both teams creating a few chances but neither team breaking through.
  • Graduate student Lea Egner dribbled past two defenders in the 8' and cut the ball inside to take a shot which ended up just wide of the post.
  • The Knights recorded nine shots and faced seven.

2nd Half

  • FDU came out in the second half and possessed the ball with confidence and conviction to start.
  • In the 63' sophomore Aitana-Martínez Montoya broke the deadlock with a world class strike from outside the box that landed in the top left corner of the goal. Graduate student Paula Ruess played the pass to Atiana for her first assist of the season.
  • Keeper Malene Nielsen was very aggressive coming off her line and cleared many through balls making great positional choices.
  • The Knights kept their first clean sheet of the season with great defense from the entire squad.

Quotable

"We have been getting better defensively each game and today as a whole we stepped up. I felt the back line was solid and that Nielsen had the best game of the season so far, coming off her line and displaying great positioning on each of the Wagner attacks. For us we always talk about knowing how to win in different ways and today we showed that we can win the scrappy games. Both teams had their moments but with a special goal and great defending we were able to grind this one out." Stated head coach Eric Teepe

"To be honest I wanted to put the ball in the top left, I hit it with confidence and always try to test the keeper with my shots." Stated Martínez-Montoya "I'm feeling great, physically it is hard to play twice a week, but my body is adapting to the pace and the style of play. I'm becoming more aware of what my body needs and do my best to recover while getting ready for games. Mentally I'm in a great state, enjoying the sport I love and trying to focus on each game. I am giving the team as much as I can so we can achieve our goal of winning the conference."
