Knights Unable to Spark Attack, Fall to Penn Monday in Close Battle

PHILADELPHIA - FDU women's soccer fought hard in the brutal rain and wind Monday as the side took on Penn in the final non-conference match of the year for the Burgundy and Blue (4-8-1, 3-0-1 NEC). Despite the unfavorable conditions, the Knights battled to a scoreless halftime tally before falling to the Quakers at Penn Park 1-0.

How It Happened

First Half
  • Senior Katie Leckonby made her first start of the season in goal for Eric Teepe's side and was thrust into action early on, making a save in the bottom center of the net in the 5'.
  • Hicksville, N.Y. product Nina Carlomusto, a senior defender, came off the back line for the Knights to fire off a shot in the 14', the first of five shots for FDU in the game, all of which came on-target.
  • Both sides played an even half with the two regional foes placing three shots a piece on the board in the first 45 minutes.
Second Half
  • Coming out of the halftime break the Knights' ninth-season leader made a quintet of substitutions to his lineup which held the Quakers' attack scores for the first 15 minutes of the second period of play.
  • Penn's Sizzy Lawton laced a shot in the 59' which was saved by Leckonby but she'd strike just under two minutes later for a Quakers score in the 61' to break open the tally and put the home side up 1-0.
  • Sophomore Ella Johnson would find the target in the 65' but Penn's keeper was able to make the stop as FDU kept on battling in a valiant effort.

Quoteable

"We're very happy with the first half," said Teepe. "We controlled play to start the game and with us playing a lot of players that haven't seen as much playing time, they got great experience playing a quality team which can help us down the stretch. It's been a long season already and several players stepped up and seized the opportunity to show us what they can do. Obviously disappointing to be down one with a chance at the end to tie it up. All in all, a good day."

The Road Ahead

FDU returns home on Sunday, October 9 when the Burgundy and Blue take-on Northeast Conference foe Sacred Heart at 12 p.m. live on NEC Front Row from University Stadium.
