Knights Fall to No. 8 Virginia Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - FDU women's soccer (0-4) fell to No. 8 Virginia (4-0) Sunday by a 5-0 tally in the fourth-straight road contest for the Burgundy and Blue.

How It Happened

1st Half
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Malene Nielsen's day started early with a 3' save right down the middle, though the Cavaliers would score two minutes later.
  • After a foul in the box was whistled by the referee, UVA took a 1-0 lead following a penalty kick goal by the Cavaliers' Haley Hopkins - the first of the three goals in her hat trick Sunday afternoon all within a nearly 15-minute span.
  • The first 10 minutes of play were all the home side with the Cavaliers dominating possession in the attacking third.
  • With one corner in the first half, FDU looked to their goalkeeper in Nielsen who tallied five saves in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Moving ahead to the 27', Laney Rouse booked the fourth goal of the day at Klöckner Stadium, the seventh shot-on-target for the ACC club.

2nd Half
  • Coming out of the break, Eric Teepe's club wasted almost no time to get a shot up with sophomore Kiomy Luperon, one of two FDU goal scorers this season, booking the Knights' first shot attempt of the fixture in the 47'.
  • FDU's first corner kick attempt came in the 54', though afterwards Virginia tacked-on their fifth goal of the game with Godfrey booking her first of the contest to put the side up 5-0.
  • The Knights' carved out some scoring opportunities off the boots of senior Nina Carlomusto and freshman Emma Moe.
  • Nielsen tallied two additional saves in the second half and was relived by senior Katie Leckonby for the second time this season in the 81'.
