Knights Lose Late Heartbreaker to Hofstra in Season Opener

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - FDU women's soccer (0-1-0) opened the regular season on the road against Hofstra  (1-0-0) Thursday evening. After falling down 1-0 early in the first half, FDU battled to a 2-2 level tally until an 88' goal by the Pride put the home side over the top late in the opener.

How It Happened

1st Half

  • In the 18' Hofstra opened the scoring to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. The goal came off the seventh shot of the evening for the defending CAA champions.

  • The Pride out-shot the Knights 8-0 in the first with five shots coming on target.

  • Sophomore Malene Nielsen, the reigning NEC Goalkeeper of the Year, kept the Burgundy and Blue within striking distance in the first half, tallying four saves.

2nd Half

  • FDU came out firing on all cylinders in the second half with the first shot coming in the 46' by sophomore Aitana Martínez-Montoya which landed wide to the left of the goal.

  • Hofstra was awarded a penalty kick in the 50' but Nielsen stepped up to the challenge and made a beautiful stop to her left side to prevent a Pride score.

  • With the Knights' first shot on target of the season, the 2021 NEC Offensive Player of the Year [Montoya] was able to use her pace to skip past the keeper and slot-in her first goal of the season on an open net to even the score at one goal a piece in the 70'.

  • Coming off the ninth corner of the game, Hofstra was able to rescue the lead in the 76' to make it 2-1, in favor of the home side.

  • Sophomore Kiomy Luperon netted the equalizer, her first career goal, in the 83' off a quality corner kick with service from graduate student Lea Egner.

  • A big-time second-chance effort off a corner kick was headed home by Hofstra to give the Pride a 3-2 lead in the 88', a lead that would take the team to the fulltime whistle.

Quoteable

"In the first half we played a bit passively and allowed them to dictate the play, because of that they really pinned us down," said head coach Eric Teepe. "At halftime, we talked about being more aggressive and taking chances as opposed to sitting back and right from the start of the second half we saw improvement which led to a scoring opportunity that could've been tucked away. It's a positive first step now what we're looking for is to find a way - with a short bench - to be able to come back against what's going to be a very physical Army team."

The Road Ahead

The Knights hit the road again to face Army (0-0-1) at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field in West Point, N.Y. on Sunday, August 21 at 1 p.m. live on ESPN+.
