Scouting the Pioneers
Sacred Heart will face off with FDU following a pair of wins against the Division II Daemen College and Division III Lasell University. The Pioneers opened their season against Daemen following a pair of canceled matches in early January. In a hard-fought battle, Sacred Heart dropped the Wildcats in five sets. The team then went on to sweep Lasell at home.
Led by head coach Bob Bertucci in his third season, the Pioneer roster features 11 newcomers and 15 returners. Sophomore Patrick Mucherino serves as the team's leading hitter with an average of 2.88 kills per set on a .471 clip. Mucherino tallied a career-high 12 kills against Lasell last week, also recording three aces and three blocks to lead Sacred Heart.
Scouting the Knights
The Knights opened their inaugural season on Tuesday, January 25, in a showdown against LIU. In attendance for the momentous occasion was FDU President Christopher Capuano, NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris and FDU Director of Athletics Bradford Hurlbut.
After trailing in the first two sets, the Knights quickly established a rhythm, recording a game-high 16 kills in set three. The final set was a tight battle as the teams fought to a 28th point, but FDU ultimately dropped the match, 3-1.Â
Jack Lydon paced the team with 17.5 points, recording 15 kills along with a service ace and three blocks. Rui Fernandes recorded the first-ever double-double for FDU men's volleyball, anchoring the team with 28 assists, 13 digs and four kills.
Next Up
The Knights will follow Wednesday's match with a trip to Austin, Texas, as they compete in the First Point Volleyball Foundation's Collegiate Challenge on Friday and Saturday. FDU is set to take on Stanford, Queens (N.C.) and reigning NCAA National Champion Hawaii in the tournament.
