New Britain, CT- The FDU Women's soccer team (6-8-2)(5-0-2) faced CCSU (8-5-1)(6-0-1) today, October 16th at 6PM. This was a matchup between the top two teams in the NEC conference table and the game lived up to the hype.
1st Half
- The match started off very physical and with high intensity from both sides as CCSU created the first two chances of the match within 15'.
- Sophomore keeper Malene Nielsen made two crucial saves to deny the Blue Devils in the opening 15' and keep the Knights in the match.
- The Knights created their first two chances in the 19' when graduate student Lea Egner had a shot blocked and junior Franziska Theus took a shot that ended up just wide of the post.
- CCSU opened the scoring in the 29' off a cross from the touchline which landed to Kristina Kelly who finished the chance in the top right corner of the net.
- The Knights created four chances in the half and forced two saved from Caitlin Murphy who was equal to each attempt.
2nd Half
- FDU came out in the second half and pushed for the equalizer throughout the half.
- The Knights first chance came in the 52' when sophomore Aitana Martínez-Montoya took a shot that ended up wide right of the post.
- Martínez-Montoya attempted two more shots in the next ten minutes, both of which ended up on target but did not beat Caitlin Murphy.
- The Burgundy and Blue continued to push for the equalizer until the last minute and their hard work finally paid off.
- In the 89' Martínez-Montoya got on the end of a cross from senior Nina Carlomusto and headed the ball into the net for her 10th goal of the season which continued her scoring streak and leveled the match in the last minute.
"We're just not going to quit, we are going to fight all the way until the last whistle, and you could see even in the final minutes we were pushing for an equalizer and the team was rewarded for their great effort." Stated head coach
Eric Teepe. "We have a much-needed break coming up after playing three games in seven days which is always tough. We are looking forward to recovering our bodies and minds before senior night which is a special night for all the seniors who have done so much for this program."
The Knights have a well-deserved week long break coming up after playing three hard fought matches this week. The Burgundy and Blue will face off against Merrimack at home Sunday, October 23rd at 12PM which will be senior night for the team. We hope to see all the fans in attendance when we honor the seniors for their hard work and success they have brought to the program in the past four years.
