Women's Volleyball Set to Compete in University of Virginia Tournament this Weekend

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - The FDU women's volleyball team (4-6) is back on the road this weekend to compete in the University of Virginia Tournament in Charlottesville, Va. on Friday and Saturday. Set to compete is host-school Virginia (4-3), along with Bellarmine (2-6) and Georgetown (4-4).

Knights Outlook

The Knights picked up a tight five-set win at home in the Rothman Center on Tuesday as they faced off with the NJIT Highlanders.

The Knights put up a solid performance on offense, hitting a .400 in the first and fourth sets. Miriam Stingl, Madisyn Beirne and Sophia Spiridonakos all met career-high attacks, with Stingl leading the way with 19 kills.

Other big contributions for FDU came from Tessa Fisk, who posted five kills and five blocks with a .400 clip. Anchoring the Knights were Hannah Schmidt who dished out a season-high 50 assists and Allison Koester with 22 digs.

Scouting Georgetown

The Hoyas will enter the weekend following a home win to Maryland Eastern Shore and loss to Loyola Maryland. Led by second-year head coach David Heller, Georgetown posted 88 kills and 32 blocks on the weekend. Georgetown was ranked to finish 11 in the Big East Preseason Poll.

Scouting Bellarmine

The Bellarmine Knights travel to Virginia following a pair of losses and a win at the Appalachian State Tournament in Boone, N.C. Led by head coach Jenni Grzebin in her ninth season, the Knights were ranked ninth in the ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll. Junior outside hitter Jayme Scott is the leading attacker for the Knights, averaging almost four kills per set. Another big hitter for Bellarmine is Bailey Roszman, who posted a season-high 13 kills for a .579 clip against Appalachian State.

Scouting Virginia

The Cavaliers will host this weekend's tournament following a win to VCU and a loss to Ohio State at the VCU Invitational in Richmond, Va. In the Preseason ACC Coaches Poll, Virginia was selected to finish 15. The team is led by Shannon Wells in her first season as head coach. Pacing the offense for the Cavaliers is senior outside hitter Grace Turner who notched 29 kills over the weekend for 33 points.

"The ladies balled out on Tuesday, and I would hope to see more of the same energy Friday and Saturday. As we play our last tournament before NEC play begins, solid and consistent play is the overall goal for this weekend."

Next Up

Following the University of Virginia Tournament, the Knights will return to the Rothman Center to begin NEC play. On September 24 the Knights will meet the LIU Sharks in Hackensack at 7 p.m.
