About Nancy Lieberman

After growing up in a male-dominated New York City basketball scene, Lieberman attended Old Dominion University in 1976 where she led the school to consecutive Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) championships while averaging over 18 points per game.

During her time at Old Dominion, Lieberman was twice named national player of the year, finishing her collegiate career as the program's all-time leader in assists and steals.

At the international level, she helped lead the United States to a gold medal in the 1975 Pan American Games and a silver medal during the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Professionally, Lieberman was the first draft pick of the Women's Basketball League (WBL) and Women's Basketball Association (WABA), later becoming the oldest player in the WNBA at age 38 for their inaugural season in 1997.

Following brief stints in with the WBL and WABA, Lieberman became the first woman to try out for an NBA team and the first to play in a men's professional league with the Springfield Fame of the United States Basketball League (USBL).

After retiring from her playing career, Lieberman joined the WNBA's Detroit Shock as a head coach and general manager from 1998-2000, later becoming the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks' NBA Developmental League team in 2009. Amidst the start of her coaching career, she was elected into both the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame (1996) and Women's Basketball Hall of Fame (1999).

From 2015-17 Lieberman served as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings, becoming the second female assistant coach in NBA history. Lieberman currently serves as a broadcaster for the New Orleans Pelicans and the head coach of the Power in the BIG3 league.
