SOMERSET, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball freshman
Aniya Bell was named Northeast Conference Co-Rookie of the Week on Wednesday, as announced by the league office.
Bell, a native of Washington, D.C., led the Knights with 14 points in each of their past two games, matching her season-high point total from
December 7 vs. Howard in each outing. She reached her 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting against Mount St. Mary's
on Saturday and was even more efficient Monday at Wagner, going 5-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the charity stripe in FDU's
one-point victory.
Against Mount, the freshman guard accounted for eight points in the first half while making three of her first four shots, and she finished out the game making three of her last four field goals as well. Bell also dished out a season-high four assists and tied her season-high with two steals in the contest.
The guard then scored 12 first-half points while making her first five shots from the floor to help the Knights build a 35-30 halftime lead in their eventual win at Wagner. Bell scored 10 of her 12 points in the second quarter, and she scored six of FDU's last 11 points of the half to help her team to a 11-4 run over the final three minutes of the half. Bell capped off the FDU run with a steal that allowed her to drive the length of the court for a fast-break layup to beat the halftime buzzer.
Bell also finished the game at Wagner with five rebounds, one shy of her season-high, and an assist to end her week with averages of 14.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.5 apg and 1.5 spg while shooting 70.6 percent from the floor (12-of-17).
The D.C. native now has a 43.7 FG percentage this season, second-best for the Knights, while averaging 4.6 ppg and 2.3 rpg. She has three double-digit point games this season and has pulled down at least four boards in each of her last three contests.
Bell joins fellow freshman
Maria Roters, who has twice garnered
NEC Rookie of the Week honors, and senior
Lauren Francillon as Knights earning
NEC weekly awards this season.
FDU next plays at home on Monday, February 10, against Merrimack at 7 p.m. Tickets for the game in the Rothman Center can be purchased online in advance by going to
