The Black Knights enter the weekend with a 3-2 record including a 17-2 win over Air Force and a pair of victories over Longwood 12-2 and 10-3. The team also lost 6-5 to top-ranked LSU earlier this season. Junior outfielder Jacob Hurtubise leads the Cadets with a .563 batting average and a .708 on-base percentage. Hurtubise, who was an All-Patriot League First Team honoree last season, set the Black Knights single-season steals and walks record with 42 and 50, respectively last season. Senior southpaw Tyler Giovinco tops the pitching staff with a 2-0 record and a 2.25 ERA across 12 innings. The Knights will face 6-foot-4 senior right-hander Mike Gagliardi, who has yet to appear in a game this season but posted a 4-0 record with a 4.74 ERA in 2018. The Cadets were picked as preseason favorite in the Patriot League Baseball Preseason poll, receiving eight first-place votes in the process.
Scouting Dartmouth
The Big Green (1-3), who were picked to finish third in the Ivy League this season, will look to end their three-game skid when they arrive in Cary this weekend. The team has played all four of its game at University of Texas at San Antonio this season and won the season opener before dropping the final three of the series. Offensively, Nate Ostmo and Michael Calamari pace the attack and are the two lone players batting over .300 on the season. In addition to his .385 batting average, Ostmo has three of the team's five doubles. On the mound, Cole O'Connor earned the team's lone win and has a 3.86 ERA through his first 7.1 innings this season. The Knights will face first-year right-hander Nathan Skinner, who is 0-1 on the season. In his first start of 2019, Skinner last five innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits against UTSA.
Scouting Saint Joseph's
The Hawks are 1-3 on the season with their win coming at UNC-Wilmington on February 15. The team has played all four of its games against Wilmington and VMI. In this year's Atlantic 10 Conference Preseason Baseball poll, the Hawks were picked to finish 10
th among the 13 teams. Junior backstop James McConnon's 2019 season has gotten off to a great start as he is 9-for-17 (.529) with a team-high six RBI. The Knights will face junior right-hander Jordan DiValerio who is 0-1 on the season with a 3.86 ERA across 4.2 innings of work. DiValerio racked up seven strikeouts in the team's season opener against VMI back on February 17.
The Burgundy and Blue Report
The Knights' (1-0-1) early-season schedule has undergone a makeover as the team's three-game series at Davidson was canceled and the team hosted Seton Hall and Dayton instead. With the two home games in place, the Burgundy and Blue performed well, topping Seton Hall 6-5 in 10 innings and earning a 3-3 tie with Dayton. Redshirt freshman
Adam Frank has been the catalyst through the first two contests and earned
NEC Rookie of the Week honors. Frank, who earned the honor last season before earning his redshirt due to injury, is batting .571 (4-for-7) with a 1,700 OPS and 1.000 slugging percentage. Frank also has a double, triple and a pair of walks on his ledger this season.
Joining Frank above .300 is classmate Nate Brodsy (.375) and senior
Bobby Romano (.333). Romano sits tied with Frank atop the team lead with two RBI, while Brodsky has a team-high two runs through two games.
On the bump, freshman
Bobby Pigozzi will take the ball for the second time in his young career after providing the Knights 2.1 innings of solid work in the season opener against Seton Hall. Pigozzi kept the Pirates scoreless and hitless, while pitching around seven walks. Sophomore
Chris Quijano will take the ball in game two of the weekend after providing 4.2 innings, with four strikeouts two earned runs allowed against Dayton.
