Mambu Records Nine Kills in Straight-Set Loss at LIU

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team dropped a road NEC tilt to LIU in three sets 25-13, 25-14, 25-13 at Steinberg Wellness Center on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Mujay Mambu paced the Knights with nine kills and sophomore setter Corina Beimers doled out 15 assists – her second-highest output of the season.

The Sharks logged three players with double-digit kills including Masa Zirojevic who amassed a match-high 15 in the win. Amanda Hubbard racked up 39 assists for the Sharks who moved to 7-5 in league play. With the loss, the Burgundy and Blue fall to 1-11 against NEC foes.

After a kill by Mambu brought the Knights within one in the opening set, the home Sharks responded with eight straight points, which established a 16-7 cushion. They would eventually stretch the lead to the final 12-point margin of victory.

The second set saw the Knights register their highest attack percentage of the contest, .167, as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Mambu delivered a service ace and a kill for the Burgundy and Blue over the early outburst. The hot start proved to be short-lived for the Knights as the Sharks roared back with five straight tallies and never trailed again. Leading 16-14, the home team closed out the set by scoring the final nine points with Zirojevic contributing three kills.

After digging an 8-2 hole in the final frame, the Knights fought back and closed to within one, 9-8, with sophomore Jessica Throckmorton providing the energy. Throckmorton recorded an assist, a kill and an ace in contributing to the final three points of the run. Now holding the slimmest of leads, the Sharks rattled off eight straight points and collected enough breathing room to close out the straight-set win.

The Knights will close out the road portion of their schedule next weekend at Merrimack and Sacred Heart. First up is a date with the Warriors on Friday, November 8 at 5:00 p.m. in North Andover, Mass.
