Volleyball Edged in Three Sets by St. Francis Brooklyn

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team was edged in three sets by St. Francis Brooklyn 25-21, 31-29, 28-26 at the Rothman Center on Friday night.

The second and third sets came down to the wire with each team exchanging set points but the Terriers prevailed in the key spots.

Sophomore Sophia Spiridonakos and junior Magdalena Maksimovic paced the FDU offense with seven kills apiece, while sophomore Corina Beimers and junior McKenna Setterlund totaled 14 and 10 assists, respectively in the loss.

The Terriers were led by Vanja Miljacic, 14 kills, and Lauren Montgomery, 13 kills, as the team outhit the Knights 44-33 in the contest. Sophomore setter Angelee Ng recorded a double-double with 35 assists and 13 digs.

After falling by four in the first set, the Knights responded in the second set, with Maksimovic and Spiridonakos leading the charge. A neck-and-neck frame saw the Terriers erase a pair of four-point deficits as the Knights led 20-16 and 24-20 but were unable to close out the feisty Terriers who clawed back with Miljacic paving the way.

Spiridonakos provided a pair of set points with kills at 25 and 26 but the Knights could not close out the win. After the Terriers turned the tables, the Knights fended off two set points including a kill by junior Victoria Demmene before Miljacic eventually closed out the 31-29 win with the final putaway.

The Terriers rode their momentum into the third set and established a 7-2 lead. Despite the early deficit, the Knights remained undeterred and eventually came back to tie the frame at 17 with back-to-back kills by freshmen Mujay Mambu and Zahraa Muhammad.

After a Terriers point, the Burgundy and Blue responded with four straight which concluded a 9-1 spurt and gave them a 22-18 advantage. Leading 24-21, the Knights appeared poised to push the match to a fourth set but the Terriers had the answer again and countered with four straight tallies, including a service ace.

A pair of kills by sophomore Jessica Throckmorton kept the Knights alive but a key double block helped the Terriers prevail with the set and the sweep.

The Knights are back in action tomorrow when they visit LIU. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. in Brooklyn.
