EGG HARBOR, Twp., N.J. – The 10
th-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson women's bowling team earned a third-place finish at this weekend's Monmouth Hawk Flight Invite against a loaded field of other nationally-ranked opponents.
After a 2-2 record on Saturday and a 4-1 mark in Friday's opening round, the Knights fought through matches against No. 6 Delaware State, in-state rival Monmouth and No. 5 Sam Houston State on Sunday to net the third-place result.
The Knights began the day with a tough loss to sixth-ranked Delaware State. Trailing 3-1 entering game five, the Knights fended off defeat by winning back-to-back games and forcing a game seven. Unfortunately, the Hornets edged the Knights by nine pins in the decisive final game to claim the match.
Despite the hard-fought loss to Delaware State, the Knights remained undeterred and battled against the host Hawks in match number two. After dropping the first two games, the Knights evened the score by claiming games three and four. The teams split games five and six before the Knights triumphed in game seven with a resounding 194-153 victory.
In the third-place match, the Knights battled No. 5 Sam Houston State. Again, the team found itself trailing twice – after game one and after game three. Trailing 2-1, FDU went to work by winning three-straight games, 177-168, 187-176 and 199-192 to close out SHSU and capture the win.
