Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team earned its first conference win of the season Sunday afternoon, taking down the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut by a final score of 1-0. The win moves the Knights to 4-5-1 on the season, including a 1-1-1 mark in NEC play.
The Knights return to action on Friday, October 12 when they host Saint Francis U at University Stadium in Teaneck.
Ahu Obhakhan (6) and Anthony Herbert (1) provided the goal scoring for the Knights. Goalkeeper Jahmali Waite made three stops in goal to earn the victory.
"It was nice to score a couple of goals and finally secure three points today," head coach Seth Roland said. "Sunday games, after you've played the previous Friday, are very challenging but playing a total of 19 guys helped keep us fresh."
A Knights team that hadn't scored in almost 350 minutes of action finally got on the board in style early against the Blue Devils, scoring a beautiful goal in the 13' to grab an early lead.
After collecting the ball at midfield, Fredinho Mompremier feathered a perfect pass between two CCSU defenders and onto the foot of a waiting Obhakhan, who coolly slotted home the strike for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Jacob Labovitz nearly made it 2-0 off of an extraordinary run of his own in the 33'; however, the Blue Devils keeper was able to get a hand on both the initial strike as well as the rebound attempt to keep the deficit at one.
Obhakhan appeared to score a second goal late in the first half after out-muscling a defender for possession of the ball and slotting it home; however, the referee ruled the play offsides and the Knights went into the half up a goal.
The penalty seemed to light a fire under the Knights, who wasted no time in doubling their lead just minutes into the second half.
After being awarded a corner, Herbert picked up the effort into the box and slotted home a nifty header inside the near post for the first goal of his Knights career, a momentum-shifting goal in the 50' minute that put the Knights firmly in the driver seat.
FDU did a good job of controlling the pace and denying CCSU many quality looks; however, the Blue Devils still managed to make things interesting.
After nearly scoring on a long, looping strike from midfield that Waite just barely managed to get a hand on, Johnathan Maldonado managed to stick one away in the 84' minute to end Waite's clean-sheet bid and cut the deficit to 2-1.
Following an extended bout of pressure in the final 30 seconds of the game, CCSU came within inches of a game-tying buzzer-beater; however, Waite made another incredible diving stop on a hard strike from ten yards out to just barely get a piece of the ball to keep it from going in.
"Nice for Ahu to get back in the scoring column, and Freddy played well in his third straight game while getting the assist on the first goal," Roland Said. "Tony scored his first collegiate goal while playing solidly defensively, and Jahmali was outstanding in goal. Additionally, Adrian did a very good job in the back, while Josh had a solid debut up top. It was a total team effort with significant contributions from the other starters as well as guys coming off the bench."
