HACKENSACK, N.J. – A double-double from freshman
Lauren Francillon (Mount Lake Park, Md./Southern Garrett) and 14 points from senior
Brianna Thomas (Baldwin, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) led the Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team to 64-51 win over Seton Hill in the Knights' final exhibition contest prior to the 2016-17 season starting.
"Quarters one, two and four our defense was very good," said head coach
Peter Cinella. "Seton hill is very well coached. They came out really well and took the lead, but we were able to respond with our defense."
"We have to be ready to play every quarter against New Mexico and everyone on our schedule. We also have to focus on getting good shots on offense and holding people down on defense."
Francillon scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the offense for the Knights. Thomas' 14 came on 5-of-17 shooting and she added six rebounds, one steal and a block in 31 minutes.
The Knights enjoyed an 18-11 lead after the first quarter and a 33-22 advantage at the halftime break. In the first 20 minutes, eight Knights had scored led by
Kiana Brown (Richmond, Va./Hermitage)'s seven points. The senior guard also grabbed three rebounds and had three steals in the first half.
The Griffins cut the lead to one heading into the fourth quarter after a 20-point third quarter. The Knight defense got back on track and held the Griffins to nine points in the fourth to earn the double-digit win.
Seton Hill had three players in double figures; Jenna Kaufman—15, Alexandria Deep—11 and Mariah Wells—10. Alexandra Hay grabbed 10 rebounds and scored five points.
Brown finished with seven steals as the Knights had 12 in the game and forced 26 turnovers from Seton Hill. Fairleigh Dickinson held a 38-16 lead in points in the paint and converted those 26 turnovers into 27 points on the other end.
Fairleigh Dickinson opens the 2016-17 season next Saturday at New Mexico. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. eastern in Albuquerque.
