Men's Soccer Earns 3-1 Victory Over Yale

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over Yale on Sunday night at University Stadium.  The Knights (1-2) scored twice in the first half and held on for the win with a strong defensive effort that kept the Bulldogs (0-2) off the scoreboard in the second period.

"It's good to get a win under our belts," head coach Seth Roland said after the match.  "I thought we scored three nice goals and I thought we created a number of opportunities.  At the same time I think we have a lot of work ahead of us to get to where we want to go as a team, where we want to be as a team.  However, I am pleased with the victory and the effort from the guys."

Senior Sam Durkot (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) scored on a sliding attempt in the 5th minute to give FDU an early 1-0 lead.  His shot was setup by a long pass from sophomore Brett Conrads (Andover, N.J./Newtown).  Conrads lofted the ball across the field and into the six-yard box where Durkot was able to corral the ball and send it by the keeper.

Yale tied the game in the 25th minute as Kyle Kenagy headed in a long pass from Archie Kinnane.  Kenagy's header carried over FDU goalkeeper Matthew Weigner (Warrington, Pa/Central Bucks South) who had moved up in an attempt to intercept the pass.

Just minutes later, freshman Javen Palmer (London, England/Sedgehill) attacked the goal from the left side.  His shot was saved by the goalkeeper, but not controlled.  Conrads, attacking down the right side, saw the deflected shot and quickly chipped it into the goal to give FDU a 2-1 advantage.

In the second half, both defenses held strong despite multiple chances on both sides.

However, the Knights were able to break through for a third goal in the 89th minute.  In desperation the Bulldog defenders collapsed on the ball in the corner.  The ball trickled out of the group where junior Christian Dietrich (Berlin, Germany/Flatow-Oberschule) took possession.  Dietrich dribbled on the goal, shot low and beat the keeper to the nearside for FDU's third goal of the match.

Weigner was strong in goal for the Knights all match recording three saves and also stepping out to break up several long passes.  His biggest play came in the in the 35th minute as Yale's Kyle Kenagy was awarded a penalty kick.  Kenagy's kick was low, Weigner lunged to his left knocking away the shot.  The stop would eventually lead to FDU's second goal of the game, as the Knights gained possession following the save and advanced the ball into Yale's half of the field.

FDU held a 15-11 adavntage in shots and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.  The Knights also earned four corner kicks compared to three for the Bulldogs.

Individually, Conrads totaled three points on a goal and an assist.  The assist was the first of Palmer's collegiate career.

The Knights will return to action on Friday, September 11 at George Mason.  FDU will follow that with a match at American University on Sunday, September 13.
