Box Score TEANECK, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team played Bucknell to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night at University Stadium. The Knights (2-6-1) and Bison (3-3-3) both scored twice in the second half, but neither team was able to find the net over the final 18 minutes of regulation or in either overtime period.
"I'm encouraged by our effort this evening," head coach Seth Roland said after the match. "We competed very well against the reigning Patriot League champs and I feel it was an enjoyable game to watch."
The first half ended without a goal being scored, despite chances by both teams. Bucknell controlled the ball for much of the half and registered nine shots, but just one was on target. The lone shot on goal came in the 23rd minute, but sophomore keeper Matthew Weigner (Warrington, Pa/Central Bucks South) made an incredible save to stop the shot. Bucknell's Justin Galiani fired a high shot from close range, but Weigner jumped and punched the ball over the crossbar to prevent the goal.
Weigner would add three more saves in the second half and another in the second overtime.
The Knights also threatened in the first half earning a pair of corner kicks.
Both teams came out of halftime looking to attack offensively with Bucknell finding the net just one minute and six seconds into the period. The Bison earned a free kick as the result of an FDU foul, Bucknell's Chris Thorsheim took the kick and connected for the goal from 35 yards out.
The Knights quickly responded as freshman Devaughn Foster (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) played the ball in from the wing toward senior Sam Durkot (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) in the 48th minute. Durkot went into a slide and kicked the ball by the goalkeeper who was also attempting to make a play on the pass.
In the 66th minute FDU grabbed the lead as junior Jordon Ellison (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) scored his first goal of the season off of junior Christian Dietrich (Berlin, Germany/Flatow-Oberschule)'s corner kick. Dietrich's corner found Ellison inside of the 6-yard box, where he controlled the ball and then shot by the keeper.
However, Bucknell would find the net again to tie the match and force overtime. The Bison again scored on a free kick, this time it was Zack Rockmore who delivered the strike from 25 yards out.
"I thought our mentality was very good and we played together as a team. It was fast paced with both teams getting up and down the field for 110 minutes. We are looking forward to the start of NEC play next Friday," Roland added.
Bucknell had a 20-11 edge in shots, but after halftime the Bison held a slight 11-9 advantage.
Despite both teams going scoreless over the final 27:54 of play, both sides continued to play end-to-end throughout the full 110 minutes.
The Knights will return to action on October 9 against LIU Brooklyn at University Stadium.
