Box Score QUEENS, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 contest to rv/19 St.John's at Belson Stadium on Sunday night. Fairleigh Dickinson (4-5) was just the third team to score on St. John's (8-1) this season.
"I think we played a little too passive in the first half and let them dictate the game. I felt the in the second half we really controlled played and created chances", said head coach
Eric Teepe. "I am pleased with how we played in the second half and our mentality, again we are talking about a team that is in the Top 30. We said at the half we need more commitment and invite more contact and being engaged more."
The Red Storm came out quick and got on the board in the sixth minute when Lucy Whipp avoided a charging
Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) and slid a shot into the open goal. The goal was the first of Whipp's career.
Rachel Daly, who assisted on the first goal, stepped up to the penalty spot and converted to double the lead for the Red Storm. St. John's earned the penalty when Shea Connors was fouled in the box.
The Knights came out more aggressive in the second half and they were able to create more quality chances. The Knights were then rewarded in the 74th minute when
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) put home a loose ball from in front of the goal. It is the second straight game in which the senior has scored and the goal is her team-leading fifth of the season.
St. John's responded to the Knights goal when Daly redirected a shot in from Emily Cubbage. The goal–Daly's second of the night—came after the Red Storm was able to keep the ball deep in the Fairleigh Dickinson third.
Fairleigh Dickinson was unable to test Diana Poulin in the Red Storm goal in the closing 10-plus minutes to try and get back into the game.
The Knights return to action on Thursday, September 24 when they welcome the Hawks of Hartford to University Stadium.
