Hanna Robertson (Eagle Mountain, Utah/West Lake) made her first collegiate goal a significant one as it gave the Knights their first win of the season and a 2-1 overtime win over the Broncs.
"We were pretty happy with how we played. We were really wearing them down. The problem was we didn't do a good job finishing. We had numerous chances and when you do not do that you allow team in the last ten minutes to push numbers forwards", said head coach
Eric Teepe.
Fairleigh Dickinson (1-1) got on the board first when
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ) netted her first of the season, in the 58th minute, when took a pass from
Connie Lewis (Outer Cove, Newfoundland/Gonzaga ) and beat Bethany-May Howard to her near post from the left side of the box.
Fairleigh Dickinson had multiple chances to add insurance, but the Knights could not convert numerous chances in the second half.
Rider withstood the pressure and eventually equalized when Tara Ballay put home a shot from Ellie Smith in the 89th minute to force the game into overtime.
Teepe continued, "The biggest part of the overtime was maybe the first two minutes, we got the kickoff and we went down and created a chance and I think that put it in their mind we were going to continue to run at them."
After the teams played a scoreless first overtime, the game looked to be headed for a draw until Robertson took a pass from Ester Rochon on the left wing and curled in a shot from 27 yards out and beat Howard to the top right corner to give the Knights the win.
The Knights return to the field on Sunday when they travel to Hempstead, New York to take on the Hofstra Pride. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
