Knights Roll In Opener vs. Mount

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J. – Sophomore Joe Flack (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) pitched seven innings and the FDU offense exploded for four runs in the eighth inning as the Knights won 9-1 on Friday afternoon against Mount St. Mary's.  The Knights (18-23, 9-12 NEC) and Mountaineers (11-29, 9-12 NEC) are now tied in the Northeast Conference standings with the team that wins two of the final three games this weekend earning the final spot in the NEC Tournament.

Flack pitched well for the Knights throwing seven innings and allowing just one run to earn his third win of the season.  He scattered six hits and walked only two batters in the game.  His most challenging inning came in the third as he stranded the bases loaded with the final out coming on a ground ball back to the mound that was tipped by Flack, but fielded and thrown to first by shortstop Matt McCann (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro ) to end the frame.

Junior Logan Frati (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to notch his first save of the season.

The Knights got on the board in the second inning with junior Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) scoring on junior John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville)' ground out to second base.

The Mountaineers would tie the game with a solo home run in the sixth, but FDU quickly answered with freshman Bobby Romano (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan ) plating a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

In the eighth, the Knights scored seven runs to break the game open.  The big hits of the frame were doubles by Giakas, senior Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) and senior Riley Moonan (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North).  Junior Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) also has an RBI single in the inning.

McCann, junior Patrick McClure (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius ), junior Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) and Giakas each had two hits in the game.  As a team, the Knights collected 12 hits, while limiting the Mount to just six.
Brennan also doubled in the game, his team-leading 13th of the season.

Thomas Williams took the loss for Mount St. Mary's.  He falls to 0-7 on the season.

The series will resume on Saturday, May 16 at 1 p.m. at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
