Roman, Sprague, Fatzinger Homer in Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team swept a doubleheader from NJIT on Saturday afternoon behind home runs from three difference hitters.  Juniors Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) connected for three-run homers in the first game and freshman Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) hit a two-run blast in the second game.

The Knights won the opener 6-5 and the second game 6-1.  FDU improves to 13-17 on the season with the doubleheader sweep.  NJIT falls to 17-16-1 on the season with the losses.

"I thought we really played well today, especially in the second game," head coach Gary Puccio said.  "Joe Flack (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) gave us a tremendous pitching performance in the second game and we got some timely hits.  The first game – just two great at bats and home runs by a Dylan (Sprague) and Joel (Roman) in big spots.  Those are the kinds of things that just get you team on a roll."

GAME ONE – FDU 6, NJIT 5
Sprague connected on a three-run home run in the second inning to tie the game and Roman delivered a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give FDU a 6-5 lead.  The home run for Sprague was his second and Roman's was his fourth of the season.

The Knights had just four hits in the game, but the two big swings provided enough offense.

Senior Anthony Calise (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) started the game on the mound and worked 1.2 innings.  He was relieved by junior Ryan McGrath (Lansingburgh, N.Y./Lansingburgh) who pitched 3.2 innings and allowed three runs, two earned on three hits.  McGrath walked just one hitter, while striking out seven.

Senior Eric Snyder (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) pitched the sixth and seventh innings to record his eighth save of the season and the 30th of his career.

McGrath improved to 5-4 on the season with the win.  NJIT's Tommy Derer falls to 2-3 on the season with the loss.

Sprague was the only FDU player to record two hits in the game.

GAME TWO – FDU 6, NJIT 1
Sophomore Joe Flack (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) earned his second victory of the season behind a seven-inning complete game performance.  Flack scattered five hits and walked just three, while limiting the Highlanders to a single run.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead on a two-run home run by freshman Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus).  The homer was the first of Fatzinger's career.

NJIT cut into the FDU lead with a sacrifice fly in the third inning and the score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning.  The Knights would add two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take the game 6-1.

Fatzinger, senior Corbin Gapski (Clay, N.Y.) and sophomore Jose DeLeon (Paterson, N.J./Eastside) – batting seventh, eighth and ninth – each collected two hits.

As a team, FDU pounded out 10 hits, while holding the Highlanders to just five.

Flack improves to 2-2 on the season with the victory.  Sean Lubreski of NJIT falls to 3-3 with the loss.

The Knights and Highlanders will continue the series with a doubleheader tomorrow in Newark.
