Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team defeated Central Connecticut on Friday afternoon behind a strong starting effort from sophomore pitcher
Joe Flack (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys). The Knights improve to 9-15 and 3-6 on the season with the 4-1 victory. CCSU falls to 10-17 and 4-5 in conference.
Flack pitched 7.2 innings and allowed just one run on seven hits. He also struck out three and walked a pair. He improved to 1-2 on the season.
The Knights plated their first run of the game in the third inning. McCann lined a single to right with one out, then stole second, and came in to score on an RBI base hit by junior
Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park). The hit by Sprague tied the game at 1-1.
FDU grabbed the lead in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by junior
Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville). Senior
Riley Moonan (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North) hit a leadoff single to start the rally. Moonan advanced to third on a base hit by junior
Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) before coming in to score on Brennan's base hit. The Knights would add an additional run on a throwing error later in the inning.
FDU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by freshman
Bobby Romano (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan ).
Flack pitched in and out of trouble throughout the game, but surrendered only one run. CCSU's Dom Severino connected for a solo home run in the first inning.
Flack worked out of bases loaded jams in the second and fifth innings, while also stranding two runners in the bottom of the sixth.
Senior
Eric Snyder (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) recorded the final four outs to record his sixth save of the season and the 28th of his career. Snyder also worked in and out of trouble, loading the bases with two outs before recording the final out on a weak ground ball back to the mound.
Moonan was two-for-four at the plate with McCann, Sprague, Roman, Romano and senior
Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) all recording base hits.
"Flack as outstanding today," head coach
Gary Puccio said after the game. "In a lot of ways this win was a lot like the 4-1 win over Wagner on Sunday. We got big hits at good times and pitched and played solid defense, which is what we need to do to be successful."
The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
