Box Score CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Fairleigh Dickinson hung with North Carolina for 20 minutes, but a strong third quarter proved to be enough for the Tar Heels as they pulled away to claim the 18-point victory, 64-46.
"They came out with a good third quarter. We were able to rebound with them and outrebounded them most for the night and we kept our turnovers down", said head coach Pete Cinella. "We missed some easy shots tonight and if we made some it would have been a closer game."
"We showed we can defend and rebound with a team like North Carolina.
Jackie Jackson ( Gaithersburg, Md./ Gaithersburg) was added to line up and produced for us tonight."
Fairleigh Dickinson (0-2) was down eight aft the halftime break but was outscored 19-11 in the third by North Carolina (2-2).
Kelsey Cruz (Chester, Va./Lloyd C. Bird) was the lone Knight in double figures with 16 points (7-of-21).
Erika Livermore (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) and
Jackie Jackson ( Gaithersburg, Md./ Gaithersburg) added nine and eight respectively. North Carolina was led by Hillary Summers who had 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Carolina got on the board first after an empty Fairleigh Dickinson opening possession. Livermore quickly tied the game at two. The Knights tied the score again six with a
Kelsey Cruz (Chester, Va./Lloyd C. Bird) jumper. The Tar Heels then scored 10 of the next 14 points to take a 16-10 lead after the first quarter.
UNC extended the lead to eight-its largest of the half-with its first basket of the second quarter. The Knights got the lead to two, 22-20, after
Jackie Jackson ( Gaithersburg, Md./ Gaithersburg) converted a three-point play. That would as close as the Knights would get on the night.
The third quarter saw the Tar Heels take a 12-point lead on two free throws from Destiny Walker. A
Kelsey Cruz (Chester, Va./Lloyd C. Bird) jumper got the Knights back within nine, but Carolina scored the last seven points of the period to take a 14-point lead into the fourth.
Unlike in the season-opener against Manhattan, the Knights were unable to mount a comeback in the game's final 10 minutes. Carolina pushed the lead to 24 before a
Madelynn Comly (Littlestown, Pa./Delone Catholic) three point cut the lead to the final margin of 18.
The Knights return to action tomorrow when they play Yale at 5 p.m. in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
