M. Soccer Unlucky in 3-0 Loss to Drexel

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team was defeated by Drexel, 3-0, on Saturday night at University Stadium. With the victory, the Dragons improve to 3-4-2 on the season, while the Knights fall to 1-7-1 overall.

FDU had its chances on the night to find the back of the net but were unlucky, as Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach made four saves while facing nine shot attempts.

The Dragons took the lead for good just seven seconds into the 11th minute when Aaron Thompson found John Grosh, who passed to Thompson's younger brother Tristan, who beat Knights' goalkeeper Matthew Weigner (Warrington, Pa/Central Bucks South) to the lower-left side of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

FDU's first scoring opportunity came off a corner kick in the 21st minute, but junior Lachland Bond's header was stopped by Afflerbach.

Eight minutes later, Afflerbach made a nice save on freshman Itai Erez (Petah Tikva, Israel /Ahad Ha'am)'s shot from the left side. The rebound then trickled to senior Nico Wright (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Jamaica College), who fed the ball back to Erez, but his shot was then blocked by a Drexel defender.

Right before halftime, Drexel extended its lead to 2-0 with 23 ticks before the intermission when Jameson Detweiler dished to Felipe Fagundes in traffic in the box, and Fagundes found the back of the net.

The Knights outshot the Dragons, 7-5, over the first 45 minutes but found themselves down by two on the scoreboard.

It appeared FDU was about to slice the deficit in half in the 57th minute when senior Miguel Escobar (Medellin, Columbia/The Columbus School) found Wright at point-blank range in front of the goal, but Afflerbach made a tremendous save to keep the Knights from scoring.

Drexel put the game away in the 70th minute on somewhat of a fluky play, as Joseph Rodriquez scored to make the final outcome, 3-0.

The Dragons outshot FDU in the second half, 5-2, and for the contest, 10-9, while holding a 6-2 lead in corner kicks. Weigner finished with two saves between the pipes.

The Knights will look to end their five-match losing streak on Tuesday, Sept. 30 when they travel to New Haven, Conn. to take on Yale for a 7 p.m. contest.
