With the victory, the Tribe improves to 1-1-0 on the season, while the Knights fall to 0-2-0 overall.
"We competed very well against an outstanding Tribe soccer team, and I was pleased with our mentality, focus and work ethic," Head Coach Seth Roland said.Neither side scored over the first 45 minutes of play, but William & Mary created more scoring opportunities after outshooting FDU, 8-2. Freshman
Matthew Weigner (Warrington, Pa/Central Bucks South), who was making his collegiate debut between the pipes for the Knights, made three of his four saves in the first half.
Late in the 65th minute, the Tribe would be the first to score, as Michael Teiman scored on a header from Ryan Flesch's corner kick to make it 1-0. Flesch would then be credited with his second assist when he found Chris Albiston, who found the back of the back of an empty net after faking out Weigner to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 82nd minute
One minute and two seconds later, FDU tallied its first goal of the season to slice the deficit in half at 2-1. Freshman
Jordan Saling (Haledon N.J. /Paramus Cathloic) picked up his first career assist when he sent a cross to senior
Nico Wright (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Jamaica College), who beat William & Mary goalkeeper Bennett Jones with a shot right into the middle of the goal.
Over the final seven and a half minutes, the Knights mustered only two shots and were unable to come up with the equalizer. FDU did outshoot the Tribe, 8-5, in the second half and forced Jones to make all four of saves for William & Mary in the second half. Overall, the Tribe held a 13-10 advantage in shots.
"We had as many as five freshman in the lineup at different times during the game, and they gained valuable experience this weekend," Roland said. "In addition, we created a number of scoring chances today and were unlucky not to get another goal or two. A tough trip as far as wins and losses go, but a really good one as far as playing against two very good teams and competing at a high level."
The Knights return to action on Friday, Sept. 5 when they host Princeton for the 2014 home opener at 8 p.m. The match is part of a doubleheader at University Stadium, as the FDU women's soccer team (3-1-0) host Saint Peter's at 5:30 p.m. It will be the first contest with the new bleachers and press box.
