Box Score HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson's women's volleyball team snapped a seven game losing streak beating St. Francis Brooklyn in an exciting five set match, with scores of 25-16, 25-17, 27-25, 17-25 and 15-11. With the win the Knights improve to 3-14 overall and 1-3 in Northeast Conference play, while the Terriers fell to 2-17 overall and 0-3 in NEC play.
The match would start with St. Francis Brooklyn jumping out to an early 3-0 lead, before FDU would tie it up with kills from freshmen
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) and
Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro), along with a service ace from freshman
Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota). The Knights would take the first lead of the match with two kills from sophomore
Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) bringing the score to 6-5. FDU would extend its lead by taking six of the next nine points scored with kills by junior
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano), senior
Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford), and O'Sullivan bringing the score to 12-8. The Knights would go on an 8-5 run to extend the lead to 20-13 with kills from O'Sullivan, Lolland and Wyckoff. FDU would close out the set on a 5-1 point run with two kills from O'Sullivan to bring the score to 25-16.
The Knights start the second set with a kill from senior
Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) and a service ace from O'Sullivan to gain a 2-0 lead. St. Francis Brooklyn would take six of the next ten points to tie the match at 6-6. FDU would go off taking seven of the next nine points scored with a service ace from Laton, along with kills from O'Sullivan and junior
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights), bringing the score to 13-8. The Terriers would close the gap after going on a 9-5 run bringing them within one at a score of 18-17. The Knights would battle back going on a 4-3 point run with kills from O'Sullivan and Laton to bring the score to 22-20. St. Francis Brooklyn would go off to close the match taking eight of the next twelve points bringing the score to 27-25.
The two teams start the thrid set tying the score at one, two and three points before the Terriers would take the next four bringing the score to 7-3. St. Francis Brooklyn would go on a 6-5 point run to extend its lead to 13-8, but FDU answered going on a run taking six of the next seven points scored with kills from Addi and Lolland, along with a service ace from O'Sullivan to close the gap at 13-12. The Terriers would go on a 5-2 point run to again extend its lead to 18-14, but FDU would close the gap once again going on a 6-2 point run to bring the score to 22-20 with kills from Lolland, Laton, O'Sullivan and Addi. The Knights would out-score St. Francis Brooklyn 7-3 with kills from Lolland and Laton, along with a service ace from junior
Grace Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) to finish the set 27-25.
FDU would jump out to an early 4-3 lead with kills from Wyckoff and Lolland to start the fourth set. The two teams would bounce back-and-fourth tying the score seven consecutive times bringing the score to 10-10. The Terriers would take six of the next eight points scored to jump out to a 16-12 lead. FDU would take the next two points with kills from O'Sullivan and Laton to bring the score to 16-14 the closest that it would get in this set. St. Francis Brooklyn would go on a 9-3 point run to close the set at 25-17.
The final set would have the Terriers coming out strong taking a 2-1 lead, but the Knights would retaliate taking the next three-points with kills from Butler and O'Sullivan along with a service ace from junior
Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) to get a 4-2 lead. St. Francis Brooklyn would go on a 6-1 point run to take back the lead bringing the score to 8-5. FDU would outscore the Terriers 5-3 with a kill from O'Sullivan to bring the score to 11-10, in favor of St. Francis Brooklyn. The Knights would finish the match with a kill from Wyckoff and two kills from Lolland to bring the score to 15-11.
O'Sullivan would lead the team on offense recording a double-double with 22 kills and 26 digs. Lolland and Laton would also have double digit kills recording 15 and 13, respectively. At the net Butler would lead the squad with 58 assists and 16 digs to record a double-double, while Laton would have a team-leading three blocks. On defense Lostetter would lead the way with 28 digs, followed closely by D. Hong with 22 and G. Hong with 15 digs.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday Oct. 8, for a non-conference match against Manhattan in Riverdale, N.Y., with first serve slated for 7 p.m.
