W. Soccer opens NEC play with 3-0 Win at Mount St. Mary's

Box Score

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team opened its Northeast Conference slate with a 3-0 defeat of Mount St. Mary's on Friday night. With the win, the Knights improve to 8-3-0 (1-0 NEC) on the season, while the Mountaineers fall to 1-11-0 (0-1 NEC) overall.

"I felt we came out fast and created a lot of good, early chances and we were rewarded with the two goals." Head Coach Eric Teepe said, "After that, we fell into a period where we played too slow. I think the two penalty kicks against us actually woke us back up. At the end of the day, what is important is getting the win on the road. Those are hard to come by in conference play."

Katey Arathoon (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's ) scored her first goal of the season in the 10th minute after a cross from the left flank from Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau) found the junior co-captain near in the middle of the box and directed it into the back of the net.

Reigning NEC Player of the Week Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central ) doubled FDU's lead at the half-hour mark with a tap-in from a Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ) cross into the box. The assist was Tice's second in her last three contests and Hoekstra's strike was her fifth in her last four.

The Mountaineers earned a penalty kick just seven minutes into the second stanza but Emma Blair's effort was saved by Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ). The junior goalkeeper would save another Mount penalty kick in the 74th minute, this time taken by Alicia Mirando.

FDU notched a third goal for the sixth time this season when the team's lone senior, Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), stepped up to the penalty spot and tallied her second goal of the season in the 63th minute.

For the match, the Knights outshot the Mount, 16-8, with eight of those shots coming on target for the visitors.

FDU has now equaled last season's win total and is just two off the all-time mark for most victories in a single season.

Hoekstra's goal was her ninth of the campaign and matches her program record-tying single-season mark set in 2012.

The Knights return to Teaneck for their NEC home opener against LIU Brooklyn. Kickoff from University Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
