Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team suffered its first conference loss of the season, 1-0, on the road against Central Connecticut Friday night. With the defeat, FDU falls to 9-4-0 (2-1 NEC), while CCSU improves to 5-4-3 (1-1-1 NEC).
"It was a very entertaining match where both teams had some good looks." Head Coach
Eric Teepe said, "Unfortunately for us, I felt CCSU were a little better in the boxes, and in the end that was the difference. We will have to move on to Robert Morris [on Sunday] and hope we can get back to finishing inside the box."
It was senior forward Tori Sousa, the team's leading scorer, who did the damage in the 57th minute after being fed into the box by teammate Brianna Scaldaferri. Sousa coolly slotted her shot into the bottom right corner.
It was a first half of few chances with the hosts outshooting the Knights, 3-2, over the opening 45 minutes. Things became lively after the break with CCSU holding a 10-8 shots lead. Both teams had six corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper
Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ) made five saves on the day, giving her 39 on the season.
Sophomore
Connie Lewis (Outer Cove, Newfoundland/Gonzaga ) had a game-high three shots, all on target, but FDU was unable to find the back of the net despite coming very close with a goal that was deemed offsides.
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak and is just the second time this season in which the team has been shutout.
The Knights will seek their program-tying 10th victory of the season when they host Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon in the first match of a doubleheader. Kickoff from University Stadium is scheduled for 12 p.m., and a live broadcast of the contest will be found on NEC Front Row.
