Gooding's Sixth-Place Finish Leads Men's Cross Country at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's cross country team completed its season-opening meet at the Fordham Fiasco/Ed Joyce Memorial on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.

Sophomore standout Darrel Gooding (Somerset, N.J./Franklin Township) took home sixth place in a field of 82 competitors. He ran the 8K (4.96 miles) course in 26:19, a course personal record for the reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year.

Fellow classmate Jenya Dyagilev (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Fort Lee, N.J.) also established a new course personal record after finishing with a time of 31:01. Freshman Kazeem Otun (Rahway, N.J./Rahway ), who was completing in his first collegiate meet, finished the course one second behind Dyagilev with a time of 31:02.

Rounding out the field for the Knights was junior Cody Shave (Amsterdam, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville), senior Frank Ortiz (Union City, N.J./Union City) and freshman Dayron Brown (Millville, N.J./Millville).

"Overall the team got the job done," Distance Coach Deon Bascom said. "We are still shaking out the rust and finding our stride pattern."

FDU will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 when it travels to Holmdel, N.J. to participate in the Monmouth Invitational.
