M. Soccer Tripped at #16 Northwestern, 2-1

Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team was defeated in Sunday's championship match of the Lakeside Classic by No. 16/17 Northwestern, 2-1, at Lakeside Field. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 6-1-0 on the season, while the Knights fall to 5-2-0 overall.

The first half featured few scoring chances for either side. FDU was outshot, 5-3, and senior goalkeeper Jacob Lissek (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon) made two saves over the first 45 minutes.

The scoring livened up in the second half and Northwestern struck first. Joey Calistri started things off with a pass ahead to Seetane up the left side. Seetane created space and sent a low pass right at Lissek, who was in position to make the save until a streaking Brandon Medina redirected the ball into the net.

The Knights equalized just eight minutes later, after a cross from Kelvin Preciado (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) was deflected and fell to an open Simon Doherty (West Lothian, Scotland/West Calder), who hooked in his first career goal.

It only took five minutes for the Wildcats to respond and it began again with Calistri's speed. He controlled a great ball sent over the top of the defense, and as he streaked into FDU's penalty area, he was pulled down by a Knights' defender. Chris Ritter then hammered home the penalty and the home team took the lead for good, 2-1.

"This was a game of two halves," Head Coach Seth Roland said. "We outplayed them in the first half but got tired after halftime. It's not the worst thing in the world to go toe-to-toe with the Big Ten champs on their home field and lose on a penalty kick. There is a lot to learn from and work on from this, but we are on the right track."

FDU will have six days off before returning to action Sept. 28 with a 2 p.m. match at Iona.
